Distance covered?

I completed couch to 5 km months ago and have recently supported my daughters to achieve it. Last night they both completed wk 9 run 3 but in they covered 4.5 km in the 30 min run but with the wam up and cool down walks it was a total of 5.5km. I hadn’t thought about it before as I now routinely run 5km in sub 30 minutes... BUT my daughter was disappointed as she thinks she needs to do the 5km in the 30 mins only not including the warm up / cool down.

Any comments? How far do most run in the Wk9 run 3 in the 30 mins run section?

I think a lot of people get hung up on running the 5K. The fact that you start the program with 60 second runs and work your way up to running continually for 30 minutes is a major achievement and should never be underestimated. There’s no reason whatsoever your daughter should be disappointed.

Thanks! I agree but I’ll still try to motivate her to go faster as it’s making me run slower now 🤣.

Please remind your daughter that the program is TIME based not distance. You run according to the clock (1 min, 3 mins, 5 mins, 8 mins, 20 mins etc) , not distance - the title of the program is therefore a bit misleading.

Ignore the title, the program's aim is to get you to run for 30 minutes non-stop, C25k is more catchy that C230m.

Only around 10% of people actually hit 5k by the end of week 9, so your daughter isn't alone by a long shot and the time/distance she has done would be more than acceptable to a lot on here, including me.

The point she should be thinking about is if she enjoyed the run, that is way more important then the distance she covered.
