That's it, I'm out! I am gutted! My knees cant take it any more. I am in absolute agony. W2 R3 . I was so enjoying the running. It has come on so quick . I cannot wear my heels and it must be bad if I cant wear my heels!😔👠 I am doing the knee strengthening exercises but it's really not easing. Hoping it will improve next week.😪

This happened to me around week 3! I took about a week maybe a week and half off, got myself some proper trainers and I’ve never had any issues since with my knee😊

Once you’re better give it another go and see how you get on💕

Really? I was doing so well too, so surprised how its come on? I have running trainers, so I dont think it's those. I cycle too, so very surprised my knees are so painful. I really feel it's never going to stop. Thank you for taking the time to share your helpful reply. I'm hoping I can say the same this time next week.😔

I had this too, it used to hurt with every run but it did pass 😊

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toSETC

SETC I cant believe it's ever going to stop at the moment? Is that how you felt?

SETC profile image
SETCGraduate in reply toJoggingT

For me it was kind of like shooting pains to the side of my knee? They used to hurt with every step. I don’t know if that sounds the same as you? I know it sounds ridiculous but they just went in the end and have never been back. I tried knee stretches too :).

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toSETC

My pain is on the inside of both knees . I've been looking it up and I think it is the Medial Collateral Ligament that hurts. Looking at anatomy pics that looks like X marks the spot. Yes hurts every step too. Carrying things heavy like shopping bags extra weight makes it worse too. I so hope it will go soon.

Pre lockdown I did spinning 3-4 times a week so was surprised by this too! I do think for me personally though it was down to my trainers- what type of ground are you running on? I ran on grass up until about week 4 which I think helped😊

Hopefully you recover soon☹️ Definitely wait until your knees are fully better and then start from where you left off😊(I decided to try a run when they were still not 100% and made it so much worse!)

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toEllaloux

Yes, I did spinning too and physically feel fit, never had any problems with knee pain before on my hybrid bike or spinning but jogging is all new to me. I run on the roads and paths. My trainers are running trainers and so comfy. I run light footed, mid foot fall too, short steps no striding out. So very surprised too. I am tempted to try out of it might go away but then the pain hurts too much to even get ready to go. Thanks for listening. I'll let you know how I get on.

It’s a whole different ball game jogging isn’t it! Before this programme I’d only ever ran on a treadmill and was really surprised at how much harder running outdoors is! I never expected to have any issues with my knees either, it definitely took me by surprise! Yes, let me know how you get on, got my fingers crossed for you!!🤞😊x

Hi

You say your shoes are running shoes but have you had gait analysis when you have it they tell you all about your footfall and show you the right shoes for you.

Better to go to an independent running shop if possible they normally bring you a selection of shoes that are right for you and you can chose which feels the best and fits in with your budget.

Or you can go home after and look for them online.

Hope this helps and good luck

Thank you for this. Yes it is definitely something I need to do. I am looking into it. I need to go when I can run, at the moment I cant even walk😔

Workingathome profile image

I’m so sorry to hear that. Maybe go and have a gait analysis and get new running shoes. Lots of stretches too, someone told me today that knee pain can come from tight (something...TF I think...) in the hip area so it could be worth looking into that

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toWorkingathome

Ok, that's a theory I can look at. I'm not feeling that a gait test will be necessary yet. Dont want to spend a fortune on trainers yet, in case I dont get better.

f1madman profile image

A lot of dedicated running shops offer gait analysis for free and without pressuring you to buy anything. Also you can always ask for them to bring you a cheaper shoe. The shop I went to was pretty friendly. Worth a shot.

I hope your knee starts to feel better I'm out of action with knee issues too :(

Will certainly look into it. Thank you for the advice. I hope you have a speedy recovery. 👍

Rest up don’t give up JoggingT, you were enjoying it and you still can, there must be a reason for the knee problems...do bit of research into causes and remedies. The gait test does make a difference, I found it helped me👍

JoggingT in reply toCouchphoenix

Thanks Couchphoenix I am so dissapointed, and in pain. I am looking at hip problem perhaps thats causing this and doing strengthening exercises. Hoping to get back to it soon.

Couchphoenix profile image

It sounds like your running shoes aren’t soaking up the impact and your knees are suffering for it. The gait test will show your running style etc and the most suitable running shoes for you 👍

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toCouchphoenix

Are the gait tests expensive Couchphoenix?

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toCouchphoenix

My knees didnt suffer whilst I was running this came on a few days after my last run. My trainers are Puma Pulse XT running shoes. I find them extremely comfortable. Not sure if I should run with mattresses on me feet! 😝

Hi @JoggingT, I’m so sorry to hear about your knee troubles. I think you’re doing the right thing with knee strengthening exercises. You ought to rest until you’re fully recovered before attempting another run. I don’t know the state of your knees but if you normally wear high heals, they are quite tough on your knees. Maybe you should try wearing flats for a while just to give your knees a proper rest and a chance to heal. Hope that you’ll be back out and enjoying running again without any aches. Keep strong and take care of your knees. 💪💪💪

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toIvyMB

Hi IvyMB.

I have been in flats since last week. Cant bear wearing heels at the moment. I am so hoping they will return to normal soon. Thank you for taking the time to reply. This page is so helpful. Being a novice at running I cant quite believe how this has come on so quick. I was so enjoying my runs too.😔

It’ll go. It’s really common. Take some ibuprofen.

Most running shops will do a gait analysis for free and you don’t have to buy their trainers you can always say you will come back, Willow used to hobble home from every run and we got some spirts insoles to support his arches which made a huge difference for around £10

I’m wondering about wearing heels, if you wear heels a lot as in at work all day it’s a big difference donning trainers and running if that’s it try using them for some steady walks while your knee heals, good luck pain is horrible

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toSueAppleRun

Hey guys, thanks for this. I might just do that. I have insoles in my Puma's they are so comfy. I do hope it will go. Thank you.

Hi! Sorry to hear that you’re really suffering through the pain.

Knee pain is commonly caused by an issue either above or below the knee that causes the knee to compensate, and therefore leads to inflammation and pain.

I posted about this on Instagram just yesterday: instagram.com/p/CCp8uLej-QY...

Restrictions in the feet, ankles or hips can all contribute. As can ‘tightness’ in any of the muscles all the way from your feet up to and around your hips. Someone alluded to a tissue earlier - the TFL. This isn’t a muscle but quite commonly becomes inflamed, much like the plantar fascia can in the sole of the foot.

Feel free to send me a direct message so we can discuss this in more depth!😊

Hey, thank you for replying. I'm not sure how to PM on here. But happy to talk through here. I have no ACL in my left knee and I have felt much better when it was removed. I have tried jogging using Couch to 5K and was loving it but woke up after week 2 run 1 feeling a little stiff, so stretched it out and it felt better. But I did slip off the kerb with my right ankle feeling pulled on that run so put it down to that. Then on Run 2 of that week I felt so stiff. No pain at that point other than a wrenched ankle. But the next morning, I couldn't bear to walk my left knee worse than my right but a stiffness on my ankle and heel on the right. The pain is inner knee so looked on the anatomy of knees and thought it could be the Medial Collateral Ligament? Today feels better, a little easier stiffness and pain still in both knees and right foot. I haven't taken any ibuprofen, just trying Runners knee prevention exercises.

That’s such a shame, have you thought about knee braces for extra support? If you find that you do have to give it up there are other ways to exercise. Cycling, swimming, walking etc 🙂

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toDtay1978

Hello Dtay1978 I do cycle quite regularly but wanted to get into jogging as when I see others jogging effortlessly I think that's such a good way to keep fit. I was so enjoying it too. Looking forward to the next run. Not sure whether splints will be good. But if and when I can try again, I will be trying a knee support. Thanks for the advice.

I have a dodgy knee and I’ve found wearing one really helpful. 🙂

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toDtay1978

The splint ones are quite frightening. Hoping that its temporary so I dont have to use one though. But I am going down the route of a gait test first. I'll let you know. Thanks for the tip.

Hi, to be honest if it was me I would get the gait analysis !

It's free but it could be something as simple as your shoes !

You could at least do with eliminating it as a possibility .

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toInstructor57

Yep, thsts my next step when I can at least weight bear without pain. Thanks for the tip. Just need to find somewhere, local and open, with this Covid thing and all!

Oh no you don’t! Stay in and we’ll all help you through! Are you stretching and massaging your quads? Often knee pain is associated to right quads so invest in a foam roller and get on YouTube for some exercise videos :)

JoggingT profile image
JoggingT in reply toPhoenixRise

PhoenixRise, bless you for encouraging me. I am just resting and doing strength exercises at present, waiting for the pain to go and I will try again. Going to book in for getting my gait analysed too. Will take a look at your tips as well. Thank you.🙏

PhoenixRise profile image
PhoenixRiseGraduate

De Nada! Snap on the gait analysis (didn’t even know what that was until recently). Do look into a foam roller and stretching the quads - they may be too strong and pulling your knee out of alignment. Particularly the IT band (runs on outside of leg from hip to the knee and shinbone). Test by getting your thumb right in the side of your quads and if it feels painful then your quad is too tight! :)
