Hi - am quite a way in to consolidation runs (averaging 4.5k / 30 mins). I didn’t get on at all with the speed stepping stones app, in fact had to stop running as just couldn’t maintain the speed. I think I probably did it too soon (and also the music is awful). I’ve been setting the alarm on my phone and running til it goes off - am upping to 35 mins tomorrow so fingers crossed I make the extra time 😀.

I have started getting a constant cramp like feeling in my calf - I’m trying to do calve stretches to ease it and seems ok when I start getting into the run (around the 2k mark - always a bit stiff at the beginning). But just wondering if anyone had any ideas what causes the pain and if you have any good stretching tips?

Stretching immediately after every run, nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/h... while muscles are still warm and supple, pulls out contractions, avoiding carrying tensions into the next run and also improves recovery by improving blood flow, as recommended in the guide to the plan.

Many people do not hold their stretches for long enough or put enough effort in. Hold post run stretches for 30 seconds and make sure the pull is strong enough to be on the verge of discomfort.

Hydration.....a minimum of two to three litres of fluids each and every day.

One other thought - have you tried foam roller? Really helps me with achy muscles.

Completely sympathise with you about the awful music. Oh that there were something by my namesake :-)

Yes, the music puts me off the podcasts too. Can't stand it.

If Anybody Important is reading this, I hereby volunteer myself to propose classical music alternatives for those of us with similar tastes :-)

Apparently the music used has been scientifically researched to help running. My preference is to listen to rather calm music, helps with relaxing into the run. I did the Stepping Stones podcast twice but even though I listen to a wide variety of music, I couldn't deal with it.

I only like classical music (plus a small amount of folk) so usually don’t bother and just run in silence!
