Time off

W4R2 completed. I am finding the first run so hard I really struggle with my breathing yet by the third and fourth run I feel perky and bright! I need advice why can’t I crack the first run? I’m dreading the longer ones where I can’t have a break to catch my breath early on. I now have to stop for a while due to planned surgery so I’m going to be repeating some of these weeks I’m hoping that will help with the breathing issues.

Meanwhile I’ll be reading about everyone else’s experience and maybe chipping in my opinion, which I’m told is strong! 😂

I really found that walking quickly during the 5 minute warm up made a huge difference to my breathing early in the run. It seemed to get my lungs in the zone! Good luck for the surgery - hope you recover quickly

Thanks I’ll remember that when I restart. Thank you for the wishes.

I also sometimes struggle to get a good deep breath ! Even running slowly , almost as if I need bigger lungs !

It does appear to be improving over time.

And if I feel it then I just try to slow down even more .

I'm coming up to some longer runs now , starting week 5 tomorrow.

I'm hoping it will still be improving .

Hope you are up and running soon after the surgery 👍

Thank you I would have done the last w4 today so I was nearly the same as you.

Great job getting it completed. Most runners find the first 10ish minutes of any run the hardest. This is all to do with how the body responds to exercise, and the fact that it takes oxygen deficit to signal the brain to crank up our systems... it’s often referred to as the Toxic 10. The best way to combat it is to set off deliberately slowly. On a longer run, if you really concentrate on it you can feel the point where you speed up with no extra effort as the toxic 10 ends. Everything you’re seeing is perfectly normal... and you’ll get used to dealing with it over time.

Hope the surgery goes to plan and you’re back out there soon.

Thank you. That makes perfect sense now you’ve explained about the oxygen deficit and the body’s reaction 💡well explained.

I hope so about the surgery.
