Running and osteopenia

Hi, Is Couch to 5K truly safe for over 70 with osteopenia? Felt great after first run, second run due today but my back is a bit sore. This might be normal for everyone but I want to make things better not worse. Has anyone else been in this position and taken advice? Really can’t bother GP with this. And really want to help myself.

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

We are not, for the most part, medical professionals and that is who you need to consult with your issue.

You are going to cause your GP and the NHS a lot more trouble if you do some permanent damage by doing inappropriate exercise, than with a simple and quick enquiry about the suitability of C25k for someone with your condition.

You really can bother your your GP with this.

Enjoy your journey.

I’m sure your GP would be very happy to discuss how you want to keep healthy! Or you could perhaps discuss it with a sports physio? I had a bone scan a while ago after I broke a wrist - that was done apparently ‘because of my age’ (67) and that showed a bit of osteopenia. To be honest, it never occurred to me that C25K would affect it or be affected by it and I haven’t noticed any difference. You’re starting something new, it’s not surprising your body is saying ‘Oi, what are you doing to me?’! But if you stay well hydrated and take it slowly, I’m sure it will ease - the NHS website has some exercises for stretching before and after running which might help. But do reconsider speaking to your GP - your health is their concern after all! Good luck!
