Ok so I appreciate this programme is not really about the 5k but....at my speed I'm not even going to make 4k! Yes, on the plus side I can now run 28mins and I know that's a big achievement but .....

Hi, I remember reading a survey on here, which popped up when I graduated. It asked what was the longest distance you’d run in 30mins. I can’t remember the stats exactly (hopefully someone will remind me) but there was a pretty sizeable percentage of people whose longest distance was well below 4K, never mind 5k. Only a very small percentage of people ran for 5k or more. So, 1) it should never be about comparing yourself with others, but 2) it’s comforting to know that there’s a lot of people on here who are achieving the same distance as us (whatever that distance might be). And remember that you can now already run for 28mins, which I’m guessing is way more than you could run 8 weeks ago 🏃‍♀️

I’ve just looked it up.....a third of all those who responded to the survey ran 3.5k or less in their 30mins, and a further 20% ran somewhere between 3.5k and 4k, so half of all those who responded to the survey ran for less than 4k. Others have pointed out that, if the course was called ‘couch to running for 30minutes’, it wouldn’t sound so catchy, so C25K it is, and we all aim for that magic 30mins, regardless of how far that takes us in terms of distance. I shared many chats with someone on here who was always way, way faster than me, but it didn’t stop us being supportive of each other, and very happy when each of us achieved a new milestone in our individual journeys. Enjoy it, you’re so nearly at that magic 30minute milestone, and from there it can take you wherever you want it to go.

Remember that many of those who responded to the survey will have been those with amazingly fast times, as they will (quite understandably, I suppose) have wanted to shout it from the rooftops. The snails amongst us will probably have been less likely to respond at all, so I think the actual percentages achieving the shorter distances will in reality be greater than 50% - and that doesn’t even include those who don’t make it to the end of the programme, which you’re now so close to doing 🏃‍♀️

That’s ok, I reckon I’m only gonna make 3.5ish. It’s not important in the program 😊
