Sore ankles. Is it my new shoes or the impact of 7 weeks of road running?

Hi, I have been running since the start of lockdown in an old pit of new balance trail trainers. 7 weeks in and they now have holes in the toe and I think the mileage is up on them so I treated myself to a new pair of running shoes. I stuck to new balance, gained half size ?(not sure how that happened but my normal size is now too small in all shoes) and I have aching ankles on the inside of them. I am fine to walk and stairs are a bit sore. Is it my new shoes. I have completed 4x 5km in them and do I go back to trail running shoes even though I am now running on the road ?

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

It also include a link to a post about running shoes.

New shoes can support your feet differently so can create different tensions and stresses, which is why it is a good idea to alternate your new and old shoes over a period to break in both the shoes and your feet/legs.

I would not recommend running on roads in trail shoes except for very short sections of runs.

Enjoy your journey.

Sorry to hear about your sore ankles. You say you're running 5k 3 times a week, but you are still on the programme, so you must be running quite fast to be covering that distance at this stage in the programme. I wonder if you could slow down, quite a lot. That might help your ankles
