I’m totally gutted!

Completed W8R3 on Saturday and in a lot of pain. I’m a fool as my left ankle had been giving me trouble over the last few outings and apart from having a two day break between runs a couple of runs ago I have largely ignored it. Normally it starts to hurt at around 3 to 4K but on Saturday it started much earlier. It was to the point that I knew I should stop by about 1k in but my determination to finish the run overruled my common sense! By a quarter of the way into the run I could feel myself adjusting my running to reduce the impact on my left ankle and my right knee started hurting. I was honestly almost in tears by the time I finished and the distance and pace was well below my previous two runs in W8. I am so disappointed that I will now have to sit it out for a while when I should be completing W9 on Thursday and was getting to the point that the runs were relatively easy. I have been looking forward to achieving this, I have planned for after graduation. This is what has been keeping me sane in recent weeks! Struggled walking on it yesterday and this morning so I expect it’s at least a week to recover!

Oh no! What a nightmare for you! Make sure you rest it properly maybe icing it will help too, hope it’s soon better 🤞

Tough, but treat it as a learning exercise, never ignore a pain, especially if it is making you adjust your body to compensate. That can lead to all sorts of referred issues.

Ankles, I am sorry to tell you, have a relatively poor blood supply, so recovery and repair is sometimes lengthy..........I did not run for nearly a month last time I lightly turned my ankle........so a week may well be an underestimate.

Follow the PRICE principles which you can find in the link in the guide to the plan. When it is no longer swollen or painful to the touch, try to keep it mobile by drawing circles with your toes.

My physio told me that cycling was fine for my injury, as it improves blood flow, keeps joint mobile but unloaded...........however that may not be the same with your injury as it was obviously a cumulative injury over time.

If you can consult with a physio, then it will be hugely beneficial as you may have an asymmetry that has caused this to occur, which may be quite simply addressed.

Take it easy..........you will be back.

Oh noooooo, don't be too hard on yourself. You WILL complete it and your main priority now is getting better. Just switch that utter determination you have to healing instead. Just a little setback that's all, but a major lesson learned, rest and try to stay positive 👍

How frustrating for you! Unfortunately you have no choice but to accept that your injury will set you back a few weeks. The important thing is to get yourself well again and then restart the programme at the level you feel confident with. Having shown so much courage already you’ll have no problem!
