I have just completed week 5 run 3 the fist "long run" and I found that my fingers began to swell up and stiffen while I was running, i've had a similar sensation when walking on DofE expeditions, which are 6-7 hours walking not as short as 20 minutes, but I havent got a clue what causes it and if there's anything that can be done to help it.

Congratulations on completing run 3 of week 5, that is a milestone run with C25K.

I am not sure what causes your fingers to swell and stiffen when running, if that persists I think you should see your doctor, you say it also occurs when going very long walks, I think you should get medical advice.

Well done on that run.

I have never heard of swelling fingers as a side effect of running and we are, for the most part, not medically qualified, so maybe try Dr Google or talk to your doctor or practice nurse.

I have painful finger thing, and it happens when I’m running, so I have to remember to keep wiggling them It’s arthritis in my case I take omega 3 fish oil daily. Nothing else at this point. Had it in my big toe for years

Ah okay thank you, I’m vegetarian so I would have to find a substitute to fish oil 🙂

I like to eat tuna, salmon and tinned fish on toast

You could eat plenty of nuts and seed oils, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, nut butters, cocoa etc etc

I get a similar thing never had it checked I’m 27, usually get it when I walk around, if I’m hot or in this case running, I wear running gloves to help keep the moisture in, stops my fingers swelling if not I have to run with my fingers pointing to the sky and have to shake my hands and fingers regularly to help with the circulation as I don’t have very good circulation in my hands only know as they get freezing bit of Raynolds I believe I could be wrong though like I said I’ve not been to a doctors for it. :)

I think I have had circulation too cos I always have cold feet so maybe it’s effecting my hands, I’ll try the gloves and wiggling thank you 😊

Yeah I get cold feet too hahaha 😂 but would likely say it’s circulation problems 😔🤦🏼‍♀️🤪 the gloves can be a bit warm sometimes especially if you live in a warm environment I live in the north east of England the weather is making the gloves slightly warm but I push through as it definitely helps me and I’d rather have sweaty hands than swollen ones! Good luck let me know how you get on ☺️🏃🏼‍♀️💪🏼🙌🏼

Ahh yeah sounds like it 🤣 I live in the south east so it’s pretty warm here too, I also have hyperhydrosis (checked by the doctors) in my hands which is excessive sweating so I’m used to sweaty hands so should be fine, agreed sweaty is better than swollen. Yes will do thank you!! 😁😁

I get swollen fingers when I run and walk. I looked it up, nothing to worry about. Long as it goes down within 10 mins of stopping its fine. Apparently 1 in 2 women get it and it’s quite common. There is no cure or no way to stop it, just get used to it. I find if i clench my fists when running and give them a shake when you are walking it doesn’t get too bad.
