Running jacket advice

Hello . I was wondering if anyone could recommend a waterproof ,wind proof , lightweight running jacket. I ve just finished week 6 of c25k so don’t feel confident wearing “ runners “ colours of bright yellow / bright pink . I think they are only used by proper runners 🏃‍♀️. Hoping someone might have found a “ quieter colour” which they could recommend 😉

Cheers

Karen

You are a proper runner 🙂

I like to be visible so wear yellow running tops from Karrimor/Sports Direct. My wife has a Ronhill running jacket which is bright pink I think, but it was available in navy too from JD Sports.

But as I say, being visible is a good option 👍

I had a ronhill jacket for Christmas, it's a plum colour, not bright. I probably wouldn't have paid that much for it myself. If you live near a Decathlon, they have a good selection. They're online too.

I think that’s the one. About £55 in a sale.

My Lidl running top was £7. ☹️

Plum sounds nice - thank you 😊

May be able to get it cheaper on Amazon? Great Christmas present from my son. I can't fault it.

Thank you for your reply . I tend to run around leisure centre football pitches , or the local lake / park . Not confident enough for street running and bright colours 🙈. ....... maybe if I graduate and do my first parkrun 😱. ........🤣🤣🤣

If you are running anywhere near a road bright coloured tops are a must. As a driver and runner I see so many people running in black even at night and am gobsmacked by the stupidity. You do not see them till you are nearly on top of then sometimes. Go bright and be seen and live longer, you will be thanked by drivers and cyclists 😇.

I have a high viz cycling jacket that I got from Mountain warehouse years ago that I use, just bought 2 long sleeved running tops from Decathlon in their sale £7.99 - 1 x bright yellow and 1 x white so I can be seen.

Btw you are a runner, we all are 🏃🏃🏼‍♀️

Thank you - think I will be visiting mountain warehouse this weekend 😊

I will admit to being one of those! I figure that I’m on the pavement so I don’t see why I’d need to wear high viz. I’m no different to someone who is walking surely?

Astra5 profile image
Astra5Graduate in reply toTiggercnk

The problem is when you cross the road drivers can’t see you. You can see them but not the other way around.

Tiggercnk profile image

So no different to any pedestrian then?

Astra5 profile image
Astra5Graduate in reply toTiggercnk

No different but advice to fellow runners that hi viz top is the way to go.

in reply toAstra5

Just to say yes, we all are. I was a bit narked by the message (it’s meant to please us I’m sure) in week 6 that says “you’re a real runner now”. I think all of us are real runners, throughout!

I've just bought a burgundy colour with reflective strips from karrimor. Reasonably priced too.

I am definitely going to check this thread to see what is suggested by others. I ended up wearing a light weight mac and still getting wet. It was sort of camouflage colour so I hoped to blend with the bushes 🤔. In summary, great question. 👍

I’m watching intently too, loving the camo idea though 🤔😀

I ve seen penguin cam , boulder cam , polar bear cam on BBC s wildlife programs. You re not the “ running spy cam “ in your camouflage by any chance ? ...👀...🤣🤣🤣.

Oh love it. Can you imagine wearing a camera? A bit like they do on motor bikes but slightly more boring...and slower. Little dogs trotting past. :-)

Week 6 you are a runner, celebrate it! Seriously though I would welcome some recommendations too, I’m 63 and about to complete week 5 and it’s so windy today.

Its weird, my running colour palette is totally different to my life one. This is a chance to channel your funk!

Personally I often feel like I could attend a festival in my gear.

If you do venture onto the roads you cannot be too visible, at least get some hi vis, reflective body straps. They go over any outer layer and you won't know you are wearing them.

Mine now have added bicycle lights, but I am generally out in the dark 🌚💡💡🌚

karen50plus profile image
karen50plusGraduate in reply toJell6

Thank you - I ve never bought / worn anything yellow or pink in my life 😳. I feel rather conspicuous just in the fact I am “ running” ...... not keen on bringing more attention to myself by being luminous 🙈. If I manage to complete this c25k I may feel differently but at the moment I m not anywhere near a road , Just parks or school netball pitch or leisure centres . If I m still doing this next winter who knows , flamingo 🦩 pink may be my thing 🤣🤣🤣.

I am hanging on for lidl/aldi to do a cycling one in anything but yellow as I don't want to look like a security guard. I did get a nice bright green one from sports direct that was not too expensive.

I was in Aldi yesterday and I got a grey merino base layer running top. Its got the thumb holes as well. V comfy. Didnt notice any lightweight jackets though. I wear an old lightweight cycling jacket.

Alissum profile image
AlissumGraduate

I’ve got a couple of jackets from Sports Direct.

Ladies Karrimor X Convertor. The sleeves zip off so the jacket is then a gilet. Or you can wear the sleeves ( which are joined together with fabric from shoulder to shoulder as a shrug type jacket. This comes just below your shoulder blades. I’m not sure I would wear this piece of the jacket though. It looks a bit strange.

Price reduced from £59.99 to £23 at the moment. The jacket comes in blue, black or coral.

I’m not sure how waterproof they are in heavy rain but I’ve not got wet in light rain or drizzle. They keep out the wind really well.

I’ve had waterproof running jackets that were very good at keeping out the rain but found they made me sweaty and that was worse than being wet.

karen50plus profile image
karen50plusGraduate in reply toAlissum

Thank you for all that information. I can guarantee you I won’t be needing anything for heavy rain - I ain’t that committed 😳😂. These past few weeks I m working my run days around this awful weather . I understand what you say about feeling clammy but as a newbie at this I don’t think I get to the hot and sweaty stage yet . I hate the wind in my head and it feels sooo cold on the 5 minute warm up . In the first few weeks of January I had my thermals on 🤣🤣. ....🥵 Can’t wait for spring 😊

Alissum profile image
AlissumGraduate

I know what you mean about the weather. I’ve not run since 30th January due to a nasty virus that went to my chest. I was going out to run today, however NE Scotland has gale force winds yet again and horizontal snow showers. I am not going out in that even in thermal running gear and a jacket 🥴 Roll on Spring 😀

karen50plus profile image
karen50plusGraduate in reply toAlissum

That is very sensible. 👍 A friend of mine is in a running club and one of the girls has been training for the London marathon. She slipped last week on mud and has broken her shoulder in 3 places . It’s all well and good “ getting fit “ but horizontal snow is definitely not included in the c25k app 😳 . That’s when you get out and build these little fellas ⛄️ ⛄️⛄️⛄️ ⛄️ . Don’t get much snow in South Wales 😞. Last year we had a small snowfall and our neighbour s 4 year old daughter made a 12 inch ⛄️In her front garden on the wall for us all to see .... it was sooo sweet . She was sooo pleased 😁

Loving this post, great to see all the recommendations. I'm only on week 2 and in this weather (in Yorkshire =rain!) I've needed a waterproof otherwise I'd get too cold as I'm still walking a lot. I'm wearing an old lightweight Peter Storm jacket it belonged to my son its rather big and almost to my knees😂.

karen50plus profile image
karen50plusGraduate in reply todijep

I wore thermals ( tops and bottoms) on my first 4 weeks because I was walking a lot and even when I was running it wasn’t getting up much speed ( still a 🐌, but hey , I m moving 👍)..... you could try thermals if you have any ? 🤷‍♀️ ...... unless people have X-ray eyes no one will know 😉

I am guilty of wearing black - but my black has fluorescent strips in various places and my lairy bright pink decathlon running shoes also have fluorescent bits on too. I have stolen my husbands running top as he isnt running at the moment. It is black with green bits and some fluorescent bits (I run in the rain but never feel wet because it is some wierd fabric that keeps you dry without being a rain jacket) and I have a bright blue bum bag on my arse, where I put my black hat and my black gloves once I get too hot. I am very careful crossing the roads - I always run on the spot, whilst I look left and right before crossing. Wk7R2 completed today. I stuck to the plan, as advised, so only ran for 25 mins (having done the full 30 and broke the rules last run!). Middle bit I actually enjoyed today, and then I hit another small incline and felt like I was dying so went back to Japanese slow running until I recovered :)

Congratulations for completing week 7 run 2 . I hope to do week 7 run 1 tomorrow 😱. You certainly sound like you have some good gear ( especially those running shoes ☺️) . Hopefully we will be graduating together in 3 weeks time 😳😱🙈🥳🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Bozsky profile image
BozskyGraduate in reply tokaren50plus

Yaya, let's hope we graduate together. My gear is all hand me downs, except the shoes, which weren't expensive, just on offer ones from Decathlon. Realised after a couple of runs that my knees and ankles wouldn't survive road running without a decent pair of shoes😁
