Muscle tear

Further to my calf 'cramp' I'm pretty sure it's a muscle tear. After nearly a week away from running after the first incident I tried a slow run this morning and my calf stopped me again with sharp pain after around 3 minutes - not a sharp pain that I expected if it was a muscle tear but a cramping feel. I think I have a visit coming up.

What is the community's advice on recovering from a muscle tear?

Get medical advice.

I’m sorry to hear this. As you’re probably aware I have had Achilles issues, and was worried about whether it was a tear or just Tendonitis. So I had no choice but to seek medical advice, and then got referred to a physio who diagnosed no tear, but tendonopathy. He was able to then offer ongoing treatment and advice on running, which got me back to it pretty quickly. I would suggest contacting your GP.

The best advice would probably be to see a Sports Physio, if money allows. I had a nasty calf tear several years ago and the Sports Physio I saw was worth her weight in gold! Repair time will depend greatly on the grade of tear and also on you as an individual. 🤷‍♀️ Sadly, I was out of running for quite a long time but the good news is that I have never had a recurrance of that injury since. 🙂 If not healed properly, then there is a chance of further injury, so caution may be the sensible route here. If you can't see a Sports Physio, maybe your GP can help?

Best of luck for a good recovery - I am sure you will be back out there soon!🤞🙂

Yes, professional help is now required. I have contacted my physio and in the meantime I will be icing the area, bandaging for support and doing no running. Presumably going back to week #1 of C25K after some weeks/months, but that's where I need physio advice. The break from running makes it clear that I see myself as a runner these days, thanks to this programme and lovely community.
