Week 9.... doing first parkrun next weekend, heart and head therapy!

Well, after nearly four years of heart trouble, two cardioversions ( heart restarts) 3 ablations ( keyhole surgery) , decided to get some fitness back by c25k .tbh the heart issues got me down a dark road, and running has helped with that. Finished week 9 today.

Next weekend local parkrun...bit nervous and want to finish it in one solid jog....all tips welcome!

Crikey! Not sure I can give advice but bloomin well done!

Seems like you know your own body, listen to it!!

Start slow, you can always speed up at the end and enjoy it😉 That’s all the advice I can offer. Good luck 🍀🌶x

Well done for all you’ve achieved Snodrop, and parkrun is a great way of celebrating your graduation. But I’m a great believer in consolidating those 30 minute runs for three weeks before you extend your time and distance. So either start parkrun with your 5 minute brisk walk or make sure you do it just before the run. Don’t run faster than you have been on the programme and return to brisk walking after 30 minutes. I took Jo Whiley with me at my first parkrun. Don’t forget to register with parkrun and print off your barcode, and get there early enough to listen to the first timers briefing.

Thanks Dexy, thats good advice, thinking I will park 5mins away( parking near our run in Eastbourne is tricky anyway), think I’ll have to control my speed when they all shoot off at the start ! Three weeks consolidation sounds a really good idea too...

Hello Snodrop. I hope your Atrial Fibrillation is well under control now. Enjoy parkrun. The advice from everyone above is perfect. Start at the back and just take your time, soak up the atmosphere. Don’t forget your barcode and have a ball. You’ll love it.

I was going to go to a different parkrun this weekend to do some parkrun tourism. But my home parkrun because of Valentines Day is having a love run, love parkrun run. So everyone has been asked to wear their milestone T-Shirts. So I’ll proudly be wearing my Red 50 T-Shirt.

You get a free milestone T-Shirt when you do 50, 100, 250, 500 parkruns.

Thanks Damienair, sounds like you are a zen master with those runs under your belt, seems a long way off for me. AF is being kind at the moment but it took me out horribly for too long. C25k has given me a lift. Thanks again

Oh I don’t have loads done. I’ll be doing parkrun no. 69 on Saturday. There is no better way to kick off the weekend than going to a parkrun. I have met so many new friends by going to parkrun. It genuinely is amazing. I’m excited for you doing your first one. Tell us all about it on Saturday.👍

Hi Snodrop, well done on getting to week 9. Lots of sensible advice already given so I’ll just add again the bit about taking your barcode. I’d also add that it is very easy to get swept up with the crowd and go off too fast. I’m very slow so I make sure I’m at the back of the pack at the start so that people aren’t having to push past me. I also try and ignore the main pack disappearing ahead of me and just do my own thing. You won’t be last, that’s the tail walkers role! Finally, don’t take too much clutter with you - there may be somewhere to drop coats etc but there’s no bag drop as such so either carry it in a belt or leave it in the car or at home! Most importantly, enjoy yourself! And let us know how you get on of course!

I keep my keys with other important things like money in my running belt, so if you can, before your first parkrun and I wish you luck with that, if you can, buy a running belt.

Excellent, that's quite a story - welcome to the Parkrun community! My best tip is not to put pressure on yourself by setting a "one single jog" rule - loads of folk at my PR walk on parts of the circuit. Enjoy your first PR for what it is - inclusive, non-competitive and life affirming. Good luck and DON'T FORGET YOUR BARCODE!

My tip is - you are amazing, you go out there and relish every moment. Take your time, take it all in, don't go any faster than you have already done. It's the nicest place to be at 9am on a Saturday morning whatever the weather throws at it. Don't forget your barcode, you are all set. Good luck and well done.
