Running has given me hope

Runner1983 profile image

I lost my mother to cancer a few months ago and before that absolutely hated running. I found the couch to 5k app and gave it a go, I’ve finished week 2 and absolutely love it. It makes me feel alive and has given me hope as I feel so good afterwards.

It helps that the city I live in has a lovely beach and the running path is next to it.

I cancelled my gym membership and I’m hoping running will be my new focus.

Really sorry to hear that. I understand your loss. I lost my mum to cancer 18 months ago and its taken so long just to get this far. It does get easier to deal with; you don’t have to feel guilt for moving on but move on you must. This programme will help. I send my love to you and wish you success in hitting 5k. Make your mum proud! Xx

Sorry to hear about your loss, I went through that a few years ago... but I’m delighted to hear about you starting to love running. While we won’t be with our mum’s as soon if we stay fit and healthy, if you believe in that sort of thing, I know they’d be so happy to have to wait for us!

Keep loving it. Welcome to the best gym, and the best bit it it’s free... well most of the time, those running stores can empty an addicts wallet!

It’s definitely helped me... I used to run a lot as a kid and my mum would be at all my races, and most training sessions... I can hear her a lot while I run... she was never quiet while she sat watching 🤣

Happy running.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

Running can be a fabulous outlet..... fresh air, everything at your own pace, Mother Nature and the satisfaction of completing each run is really rather amazing.

Good luck 🍀

Sorry for your loss Runner1983. I know exactly how you feel I lost my mum to cancer a couple of years ago. I wasn’t running at the time but started running later and I’m now doing a 10 mile run for the local hospice were my mum spent her final week. Good luck with your c25k journey.

Hi Runner1983 ...I am so very sorry for your loss...loss is a very difficult pain to deal with and when it’s your Mum it’s unbearable...and really knocks you sideways...you will feel heartbreak, denial, guilt, cheated, lost, alone...every emotion that’s going...I’m speaking from experience here, I lost my beautiful Mum 10 years ago (New Years Eve) and I am just about coming out of the other side...

In my opinion, you have made the best decision by taking up running, it will give you all the time and headspace you need to help you through some difficult times and feelings...it’s helped me enormously not just with grief for my Mum but just with life. I’ve run with tears of sadness, joy, frustration...you name it and I’m sure you will too. Be kind to yourself through the programme, having this to focus on will do you the world of good. Keep checking in on here so we know how you’re doing...big hugs to you x

Well done for getting out there. It's much better for you in the fresh air than a stuffy old gym. I do this for my mental health too. I surviving after 5 yrs but still struggle with my mental health. It's not easy but I find it makes feel strong enough to cope. Time doesn't change things but you learn to cope more. Keep on running !! 🏃🏃

Losing a parent is one of the hardest crosses to bear, especially to cancer 😢. My heart really goes out to you & your family.

I’m glad you’ve found running to bring some relief at such a sad time. Be kind and gentle with yourself, take one small step after the other, and over time, it will get easier, i promise. (((Hugs)))
