When it is ok to resume running after sciatica?

Hi there, six months ago I was comfortably doing 3 x 5ks a week with a view to progress to 10k. All of that came to a grinding halt after a damaged lower back disc was pressing in my sciatic nerve. It was painful and debilitating.

Thankfully it’s cleared up with no surgery just gentle stretching exercises.

I’m keen to resume my running again but the physio is saying that he is not a fan of running as it’s high impact.

Looking to hear from anyone who has had sciatica and if and how they resumed running. I will definitely need to start back at wk 1. The difference in my fitness the last six months has been remarkable not to mention the impact of no exercising on mental health.

I have had a few disc problems with my back over the years - although the worst times were in my twenties and during one pregnancy(I am now 54). However, I had a bout of sciatica about two and a half years ago which was horrible and left me with nerve damage and foot drop on my left side. This gradually resolved over several months. Getting back to running after this required all my determination and stubborness(!) and despite having run up to HM distance, I had to drop right back and build up slowly. At first I felt as though I really needed to focus on moving my left leg properly as it was so much weaker than my right. To cut a long story short - and just to offer a different view point to your Doctor(!), running has helped me build up my strength again. I have recently run distances up to 11 miles. I was never told not to run and had a fab sports physio who gave me rehab exercises and set me on my way, but certainly I have no regrets about carrying on with my running. Obviously, your medical situation may be different but I hope this encourages you! Good luck! 😀
