Week 6 run 3 done! ...too soon for Park Run??

I’ve just done W6 R3 🎉 well kinda....I felt I’d been going a while and checked my watch app and it was 25mins...my podcast had shut off at the halfway point! So I still did it (watch has been accurate on other runs) but I didn’t get the buzz of being told well done 😒

I was planning to do Park Run with a friend on Saturday but now I’m not sure it’s a good idea...I’m pretty slow and so it would mean running (slow jogging) around an extra 12-15 minutes and I don’t want to do too much too soon. I know I can walk bits if I want to but I know I won’t want to! Am I being a wuss?? Shall I wait a couple of weeks??

If you think you won't walk for part then much better to wait.

If you could go, start off walking for your warm up and stop when the app says and finish up walking, that would be fine.

The last thing you want to do now is overdo things and ruin the progress you have made so far.

We would usually recommend waiting until W9 for Parkrun and even plan it in for your final, celebratory graduation run. 👍🏻😁

Go to parkrun! It’s never too soon, my only regret is I wished I’d gone sooner. I very, very wrongly thought you HAD to RUN it all and be of a certain speed, you don’t........lots of people use it as one of their weekly runs on the C25K programme - you don’t have to be doing C25K either....

There are tailwalkers, their job is to come in last - walking..... no matter how long it takes, (usually at least an hour) so you definitely won’t be last.

You’ll be surprised at the variety of people, every shape, age and size.

Just remember if you want a result you need to register with parkrun UK, and print off your unique barcode to take with you.

It’s about going along and joining in, getting out in the fresh air, in whatever way you want, that’s all.

Also, if you’re really not sure, just go along and watch, or volunteer, the whole thing only exists because of fabulous volunteers (aka hi-vis hero’s!)

Do it! I’d come round with you if you came to my local parkrun.

Well done

We recommend that if you want to do parkrun that you stick to your programmed C25K workout and walk the remainder, to avoid doing too much too soon.

Ditto. I would also suggest that for your 5 minute warm up, start towards the back to avoid being trampled by the racers. Good luck!!

I did my first Parkrun last Saturday as my Week 7 Run 3. I ended up running the whole thing (slowly) but was planning on walking a bit.

I think as long as your sensible and don't push yourself too much you won't do any harm.

I took 38mins and not had any adverse effects for running for that long!

I think you have a choice of accepting that you will need to walk part of it and follow the program, or if you feel that you don’t want to walk part of it, wait until you are ready to run the whole way. You know yourself! 😄

Certainly don’t go and run the whole thing now - too much too soon can be a fast track to an injury. - Then you would be be sick as a chip on the IC wishing that you had had patience!

It might help to go and have a look at your local park run to see if there are many walkers and then you would know if you are comfortable to join in with that. 😄

Thanks - this is good advice. My park run seems to be full of quite speedy folk...

Ah, ok. Mine too, that’s why I’m waiting! When you are a snail like me it takes a while- but I’ll get there eventually. 😄

A friend who has done Parkrun all over the country tells me that some of them have many walkers and others not. She also suggested that there may be other ones quite close who have more walkers than our nearest one.

I’ve decided to wait and do a PR a little later in the programme...one of the great things about it seems to be that different people do it for different reasons/get different positive things out of it - for me I really want to be able to run it all (no matter how slowly) so am going to hold on til a bit closer to that!
