I was going through clothes in an old wardrobe and came across this old t-shirt, the sport aid run in may 1986, I ran it in Belfast, did anyone on here participate?
I ran the world, did you? : I was going through... - Couch to 5K
I ran the world, did you?
Wow! I did not participate, but I remember that Sport Aid run!!! I was definitely not sporty back in those days π
Wow! I remember it and the song π I didnβt run it. I was 12 then and running wasnβt on my agenda-the only activity I did was roller skating π³
Oh I loved my roller skates. I would love a pair even now as an adultπ
So would I, but I broke too many bones back then π Dread to think what Iβd be like now!
You could have roller skated the world π
I think we have some roller boots for sale in my work, I'd be tempted if I was a bit younger. π
I ran the world and I am delighted to say I could run it faster today than I ran it then - I was 16. That thought has made me really happy π The 16 year old me would not believe it if she saw me running now.
That's brilliant jayval π
Hi, I was the founder and organiser of Sport Aid and Run the World. I called the 10k run 'The Race Against Time' and it took place on May 25th 1986. It was on the same day as Hands Across America. I couldn't change the date as we were delivering a petition of blistered feet to the doorstep of the UN in New York on the eve of the very first UN Special Session on Africa, the following week. I ran the race in New York at 11:00 am EST. There were 19.8 million runners in 89 countries all running simultaneously. Still is the biggest race ever recorded. I guess you have to be over 40 to at least remember it! It raised $35m and caused government to cancel $150m of African debt... and all done before the internet, social media and mobile phones.
