Hope you'll indulge me for a couple of minutes while I share my experiences of Week Six, which I finished on Friday. I won't bore you with one of these every week - it's just that for me, this week has been absolutely pivotal.
First, I passed the 4k mark. There's work to be done, for sure, but it feels like a really significant milestone, and that the 5k really is in sight. Considering how panicked I was at the runs going up to a whopping ninety seconds, that feels great!
I also feel like I'm entering a new phase. No more alternating, just runs. Steady increases, a chance to get up to 30 minutes and that elusive 5k - and hopefully develop as a runner. Improve my technique, improve my posture and get faster.
The morning of run two, I read a couple of posts on here about how the first two kilometres are hard, even for some seasoned runners. Now I had no reason to doubt that, but it clicked that day. By happy coincidence the music I was listening to went from music to stomp to (think pounding baselines!) to music to glide to (think slightly orchestral!). And glide I did. Suddenly, something clicked and I started to find it much easier. It almost felt like I was flying. And best of all - I was really starting to enjoy it. I looked at my distance - just shy of 2k!
So what have I taken from all this? Although I'm a novice, I feel like I can (just about!) say that I'm a runner. What seemed impossible two months ago now seems inevitable. I bought running shoes, because I've decided I'm going to stick to it. I've got a 5k booked to coincide with my finishing week, but now I've gone and signed up for a 10k in May.
If you're earlier in the programme than me, I hope you have a week like this. In fact, I'm sure you will. Keep it up!
