And the question I forgot to ask in my euphoria of having completed day 1 is probably a stupid one. How important are your running shoes at the beginning of the programme? I’m just using my usual dog-walking trainers. Should I be looking for proper running shoes or is that something I can leave until later?

I started in trainers I had and it’s fine for starting. But do try and find a good independent running shop for some gait analysis & shoes that support your running style in a few weeks.

One tip from me. Your brisk walk can be faster than your run! As the durations increase I found I was running too fast out of the brisk walk, so learn to go to a slower run, and you’ll be fine!

Thank you. Good advice. I already think getting the pace right is a challenge. I was running on a track in the local park with a few proper runners around. I tried to keep up with one of the slower ones but quickly found that wasn’t going to work.

Well I have the perfect film for you! Others on this site know I’m incorrigible - I post this all the time, but it absolutely was the thing that made me realise running was for me. I run using the Japanese slow jogging technique - it’s a low impact style of running, designed to avoid injury. I saw it first in W6, and not sure I could have progressed so quickly with out it. It’s also meant that the running itself is a pleasure!

Even if it’s not the way you want to run all the time, it’s a helpful technique to get you going, or if a run is going ‘badly’ (you’re really struggling or not enjoying one), or to avoid injury, and very good for the heat too. I can now run for over an hour, but that’s only because of this style of running! Hope it helps x

Yes you need proper running shoes don't have to be expensive ones though, if you have a sports direct nearby the karrimor shoes are good 😊
