So I used to be quite fit before I got pregnant. I had a really hard time of it with my hips and my spine during my pregnancy and my fitness has just disappeared. I've just done week 1 run 2 and am suffering with pains in my hips, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to help?

Maybe try some low impact exercise like swimming

Welcome. Congratulations on the baby. I was reading that some women who can do sit-ups can’t after childbirth... so it makes sense that you have new weaknesses that were not there before. Try nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/s... this plan, it has a forum here too. The stronger the core is the easier running will be, so it’s good to work on our weaker spots on our rest days from running.

Well done getting started. You can do this, enjoy your journey.

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and includes advice on minimising impact and stretching after every run which will help.

Doing non impact cross training to build strength on your rest days will also be beneficial.

Good running shoes fitted after a gait analysis done at a specialist running shop will also reduce impact.

Enjoy your journey

Thank you very much. I didn't even consider that my gait may have changed after giving birth as I have pronation running trainers.

How old is your baby? It might be that your joint muscles have not yet lost their baby stretching abilities. Your body goes through wired muscle elasticity during and after pregnancy. Maybe it’s just too early?

Did you get diagnosed with PGP in your hips during pregnancy? If so, it can continue for a long time after the birth. I had it quite badly and still get hip pain occasionally. I’d suggest seeing your GP if the hip pain you are getting now is the same as it was during your pregnancy, just to make sure everything is ok.

Yes I did. It was so bad that I couldn't walk some days but seemed to get better. I might go back to doctors to see if they can help. Thank you x

I had SPD throughout both my pregnancies and found pilates really helped to get my core back afterwards. I still have to be careful not to jar my leg suddenly or the pelvic pain is eye watering but having a decent core helps to girdle everything together.

Not that I have a decent core these days! 😂😂😂

Thank you. The pains no where near what it was when I had my Spd but its still painful enough to put me off running again. I will go to see the doctors see if they can refer me for more physio.

Lol my core is under my fat somewhere I know it x

You can self-refer to physio, these days. Speaking as a retired midwife, and as someone who endured excruciating pelvic pain in my pregnancies, physio is what you need, firstly. I hope you can get the right help. Xx

Do go to the Dr. It could be that you need physio. They could put a fist between my separated stomach muscles after i had my first so there was nothing supporting my pelvis. Physio and pilates helped to bring them back together and although i still get occasional twinges it really, really helped. I hope you get it sorted, i really feel for you.
