When to go to the doc?

Hi All, I haven’t run for about 3 weeks now as I damaged my heel on my last one. It’s been 3 weeks now and I’m managing to walk a bit better but still can’t put my full weight on it. Feels like a tear in the ankle/heel but I don’t know. Is it worth a trip to the doc as not sure what they could do really. Just want to know what I’ve done so I know the best way to get it better. So gutting 😞

I would definitely see the doctor, less in order to find out what's happened but more so you can get advice on how to help it to heal as quickly as possible and then how to avoid something similar in future. If the Doc can't help (and it seems some of them simply advise people to "give up running" - as if that's sensible advice to a runner!!), a sports therapist or physio would surely be worth the small investment.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

Thanks Pianism. I went to my local running shop but the therapist there is £40 an hour and I’m afraid that’ll have to be a last resort for me at the mo. Think I’ll try the doc first and if they’re useless will bite the bullet and spend the money. Like you say, I need advice on the best way to heal it. The irony is I really want to have a gait analysis done as I think it was my crappy trainers that were to blame, but I can’t run on it properly yet!!

I work at an University (Manchester area) and we have a sports therapy department that's open to the general public. At £15 per session, it's a lot cheaper than the private physios. I wonder if there's one similar close to you?

I work at my local college and they have a gym and sports science courses so could ask there. Good thinking, thanks! 👍🏻

Ah... you may be lucky then. Mine's free for me to use as an employee. Or perhaps they have a later-stage student that would be willing to give some advice.

Our local hospital had a self referral system for the physio which doesn’t cost anything,

You might be lucky in that respect with your local one- your doctor would know.

Hi , just seen this .

Take a look at jumpingfrogs post Ankle injury of 4 days ago and more importantly Mentors link on a patient paper.

It may reassure you and help with informational understanding.

Of course it is not self diagnosis and you need to see the professionals but the post and comments from mrrun and the paper will give you support.

Definitely initially you must rest it and a wet tea towel in the freezer and then round your ankle like a plaster cast 4 times a day for 19-20 mins is good.Heat also in some situations. So both.Another tip is an ice cube held directly on the painful spot as you just rest it.Keep doing it for as long as you can be bothered.Heat and cold, if applicable, simply just improve the blood flow to the spot and accelerate the healing.Usually heat is associated with old injuries and ice to new ones.

Patience, self belief, you will repair and it is about getting the correct assessment and exercises and stretching to fix it.

If it’s tendon, that repairs slower and longer so you cannot get ahead of that.🤔

Atb, in getting sorted.

👊💥🌟👏👏
