Hi. Just started c25k today

I'm 19 and I just gained about 30kg in the last two years. I now weigh about 100kg. I can't even walk up the stairs and maintain a conversation. I just want to be able to lose weight, fall in love with running and be able to walk and have a conversation without losing my breath.

I only survived the first 15mins today but I'm still glad I at least got out of bed and did something.

Great work ! ⭐️ I’m also very overweight - in fact I’m carrying an extra person in fat (I call it Ethel) so I know how you feel. C25k is great for building your fitness but it doesn’t necessarily take much weight off by itself: you’ll see most benefit if you also follow a healthy eating plan. Enjoy your journey x

Having lost 3 stone over the last 3 years and at target at Slimming World I think I was always under the impression that exercise would help me lose weight. Unfortunately it doesn't alone but it does help overall stamina and certainly general health in conjunction with healthy eating.

I wish you every success on your Couch journey, you can do this!

This is excellent to hear... very well done for getting out today. I've lost weight over the past couple of years but need to lose more and get fit so I understand where you're coming from. All the very best for your next run.

Welcome to the forum and well done on your decision.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Follow the advice on pace and make sure that you can carry out a conversation as you run...........which may be very slow, to start with, but will get faster as you get fitter.

Enjoy your journey.

Fantastically well done to have started the C25K programme - you won't regret it and you will get lots of great advice and encouragement on this forum. Take it slow and steady (and I mean slow). It's about building up your stamina and ability to run for increasingly long periods, but it doesn't matter how long it takes you to complete the programme, and you can always repeat runs if you don't manage them the first time. Always take at least one rest day between runs, and do some stretching after each run - this really helped me avoid injury. Here is a link

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/h...

Regarding weight loss, the running alone is unlikely to lead to significant weight loss, though it should lead to more muscle mass and toning. I started a year ago and was about 10kg overweight. The running improved my shape a bit but didn't lead to weight loss. I started calorie counting and the weight shifted - lost 8kg so far. And the running helps to maintain the weight loss I think. There is a useful NHS resourcefor weight loss - see

nhs.uk/Tools/Documents/WEIG...

Sorry for such a long post. I really hope you are successful with your goals. Please post regularly to let us know how you are getting on or if you have problems and need advice. You've done the most difficult thing, which is to get up off the couch and get out there. Well done! 👏👏👏👏👍😀

Well done for starting C25K. I hope you really enjoy it.

I too have a lot of weight to lose, and have just finished week 7. The best piece of advice is about staying slow. My run (jog) feels slower than my walk, but it has meant that I have successfully completed each of the runs so far. If you feel like you are gasping for breath, you are going too fast.

Let us know how you are doing. This forum is great for support, advice and motivation.

Good luck for your next run.

Well done - the first run seemed incredibly hard to me and I didn't quite believe that I would be able to keep going but am managing to keep plodding through and am now even enjoying it (something else I didn't believe would ever happen!). Its a great 'bit by bit' programme and although I don't think I have lost weight I like my shape better and the best thing is that, after taking at least an hour to properly recover in the first few weeks, I am now breathing okay after just the warm down walk. Take it slowly - run at your own pace. You can do it!

The first one is the hardest! So well done for getting started. Measure yourself because although this is not a weight loss programme you will lose many inches as you tone. But a crucial thing is that you shouldn’t diet without exercise as your body would rather give up muscle than fat - so by running and a more healthy diet you will lose weight. I started in November and have lost about 3/4 stone (but I haven’t been dieting) but many inches. Think of this as part of a new long term plan of getting fit & healthy. The other part which will help you is learning to run slowly - your run can be slower than your brisk walk! Search Japanese slow jogging movement on youtube and you’ll find a great short film showing a low impact slow running technique - this changed everything for me.

This is an amazing journey and a very kind and supportive forum. We’ll all be here for you so post your progress, any questions and we’ll do what we can. You’ve started - which is the hardest thing. You’ll be amazed at what you can do! Good luck x

Welcome... great decision to do this and well done getting out there. They say to finish first you first have to finish... but that’s not true... to finish first, you first have to start... and you have. Keep crossing the start lines, repeat any runs you don’t fully complete, don’t quit and you will be running 30 minutes at a time pretty soon. Run nice and slowly to let the legs and fitness develop and you’ll be just fine. Enjoy your journey.

Well done you, first step is the hardest. Be proud and keep going. I am hopefully going to graduate tomorrow and the weeks have flown by - just go at your own pace but keep going. The forums have really helped me keep motivated so keep posting.

I'd echo the advice of other replies - you will need to follow a healthy eating plan too if you are going to lose weight. Best advice I got was to get a food diary app and be honest with recording it. Its really helped me get more aware of what I eat and keep my calories down. Progress is slow, but its taken years to put it on and I need to be realistic that its going to take time to shift.

Your body is an amazing thing and if you treat it kindly now it will respond.

Well done for getting out and starting C25K. You’ve started and that’s the hardest step. My advice as always is drink 2 litres of water a day first of all. Tweek your diet and start small changes to your diet. That helped me. I’m on wk 8 now and have lost 15lb. Enjoy your running journey you can do this 👍xxxxx

Congratulations for taking those first steps and getting out there. Some days will be better than others but hang on in there. As others have said exercise and healthy diet going to be key to losing weight and getting fit but you can do it. Read other posts to see you are not alone. Check with your gp to see if you would be entitled to join Weight Watchers or Slimming World without needing to pay. If you don't ask....

You have made first steps which takes courage so Good Luck for the future.
