Crap knees

Argh! The last two days my knee has been terrible, it’s at the back and also the top part of my thigh again at the back, feels like someone has a tourniquet round it and very so often stabs me with a kitchen knife!! It swelled up last night and I struggled to walk. So this morning I it up at 6am hoping everything was back to normal but I couldn’t achieve even the smallest of runs because of the pain... I cried because I’m so frustrated and feel like a loser and like all the people who keep telling me running is no good for a fatty will be smug. But I didn’t stop totally, I brisk walked it all the way round trying not to favour any leg and not to limp. Signing off feeling teary and like a loser. Xx

You were brave for trying... but...really, when you have pain or swelling, please do not run.

We are not medical experts but swelling and pain are the signs that something is very wrong.

You are not a loser... we know that and you know that.. so... go and get this checked out... try not to walk on it too much and do not run until you have an idea what is going on.

Please, do keep us posted. Ignore the smug folk... they are envious that you are doing this... :)

I can't give much advice because I'm a newbie but I think you've done great to get up and out with the pain, especially in this weather. Walking is good for you too so feel pleased with yourself. Baby steps and all that x

We do advise not to run or walk with pain...( see my reply above).. it is very easy to cause more injury :) Even when we do things by the book it can still happen... ( I have had injuries which I was unaware of) :)

No way are you a loser....the people who tell you, you can't run are losers for being so negative. People like that get me so cross 😡. I have the utmost admiration for anyone who does any kind of exercise no matter how little or slow it is... they are trying to improve their lives and no one should knock them for that. If they say they are your friends.. they are not, get rid of them, friends encourage, they don't put you down. I have bad knees and got them checked out before I started this. So pop yourself off to the Dr and get it looked at. It could be something simple that just needs rest but it could be you've torn something. Either way it needs to be looked at. Once it's all sorted you will be back on the programme and we will all be here waiting for you to cheer you on. In the mean time if you can walk do so, even if it's slow, don't over do it and listen to what the Dr says. On my Drs advice I wear neoprene supports and good trainers, my knees are irreparable don't let yours be the same. Good luck and chin up..... this programme is going no where and will be here waiting for you. 😊😊🏃🏽‍♀️

Don't be too disheartened. Most issues can be overcome, but it may not be a quick fix.

Follow the link left by Oldfloss and then the one that will take you to the NHS sports injuries page.

Rest until all swelling and pain has gone.

Most new runner's aches and pains are caused primarily by the impact of running, so do all you can to minimise it. Slow down, avoid heelstriking, keep footfall under your body not out in front, run on grass or treadmill and wear proper running shoes fitted after a gait analysis done at a specialist running shop.

If this persists, then please get the opinion of your GP or a physio.

You are not a loser - at all. Few things to try, you’re too strong and committed to give up!

Gait analysis and better shoes (if you can afford it), sometimes our natural running style causes pain and shoes with support can help foot placement and give extra support to knees and ankles.

Heel striking - if you’re running like you walk (walk - heel touches first and foot rolls through) you could be giving yourself pain this way. So you could look at your technique?

Pace - I found this very useful to learn how to run very slowly and I’ve been using it to get better foot placement and small steps - m.youtube.com/watch?v=9L2b2...

I’m 53 (and carrying some extra weight) so I’ve been very mindful of not injuring myself - and slow running has really helped me stick at it. And I’m getting fitter, losing inches, and toning up very well - we don’t all have to run as fast as excited whippets!

But definitely rest and recover and if you can, perhaps see a sports physio for some better help. Good luck and let us know how you get on x

If you had no issues prior to starting to run, the chances are that whatever has caused the pain can most likely be fixed after you have rested and let things settle.

The correct shoes make a huge difference, so if you can, once you are pain free, look into getting gait analysis and suitable shoes for you.

Regarding the comments, I don't particularly mention running to work colleagues, every now and then they bring it up, just to tell me that they think I am mad!, or that I look peaky or so it seems.

Wow... ok... you’re doing what all those guys who say running is no good for you won’t and can’t do... so screw them, they have no clue what this takes and how possible it is to do this with some extra weight. So, you have a knee injury... I got one too... I had healthy BMI... it happens. Wonder when the last time the people who knock you last had a sporting injury?! So, it’s annoying and it’s frustrating... but you’re not a loser, quite the opposite, you’re a winner, you got active, you’re changing your life.

Have a read of the runners world guide to the knee. It has some good injury advice and a bit for after it’s healed, to prevent recurrence and strengthen that joint.
