Week5 R3 - headphones?

Hi, I've been lurking here a while, thought I'd post! I started doing C25K a couple of years ago, but got horrible shin splints in week 4 so gave it up, mind, I was running in crappy 10 yr old trainers...trying again this year, wearing some proper footwear this time, off the fags too, really enjoying it so far!

It's the big run tomorrow, I haven't run for 20 mins since doing cross country at school, a good, um, few years ago, but I reckon it'll be fine. I've not been running with headphones in so far, though I've read that it might be a good idea as it can distract from the pain.. What do you reckon? If I run at a weekend, its on a nice canal path, so I'm happy to run without them as I can hear the birds tweeting etc, but tomorrow I'll be running round an industrial estate after work (the nearest lit flat area).

I always run with music, really helps when I'm flagging, I save the faster tracks for the end of my run and they drive me on 😊

Great job so far... you’re gonna love that 20. Music can help... just make sure you can hear any traffic. Have fun out there.

I love a bit of a Magic FM to

Keep me going. Bought these rubber extensions you fit onto headphones on Amazon, pack of 3 different sizes and they are really good rather than buy headphones

Hi. I have never run with music, just with the podcast telling me what to do and for how long on each run. I listen to the sea, watch the waves, other joggers who are faster than me, the birds, the people etc. The time just passes and most of the time I've forgotten I'm doing something that eight weeks ago I would never have believed that I could do.

Once I ran around and around the empty car parks at the National Exhibition Centre. There was still a lot to distract me there.

I find music really helps. I listen to feel good songs, old happy songs! I’m doing my 20 min run on thur/fri. Excited for it. Good luck x

Hi I run with my Spotify play list thru wireless headphones kept in place by a headband! Laura's voice breaks into the music every so often! I'll try and put a link up.

Please do!

Hi, I'm with Coolcookingteacher above. I didn't start to listen to music until around W4, but it's made the longer runs so much easier (I'm now in W8). When Laura cuts in, the music quietens, so you won't miss any of the encouragement from her!

Hi, I listen to music...but recently I’ve listened to my audible book while running. It works for me. Good luck with your run I’m sure you’ll nail it😬

I’m a radio 4 podcast girl. The 6.30pm R4 comedies are a bit short of 30 minutes and really help me take my mind off the pain. Either that or a bit of brexit news!!

I do both with and without headphones depending on where I'm running. At parkrun I don't like to have music on as it isolates me from the atmosphere of the event. But running around the football pitch in the park I always use music. Why not try a little music and see how you feel. Be safe though. :)

Thanks everyone, I ran the 20 mins, it seemed to get easier after the 15 min mark! I ended up listening to a podcast, had to play it through the phone speakers because my earphone wire kept falling out of the jack, better invest in some bluetooth ones I guess!

On track to do the Huddersfield Parkrun in March! :)

Do you have a case on? My jack falls out with the case on so I have to take it out and then I pop it in an arm strap so there's no chance of dropping it or falling out my pocket.

So I hadn’t been running with headphones and also thought I should for a longer run. In the end however I thought I wouldn’t try something new and just do as usual and it was fine. As you say that it’s not a super location maybe take headphones in case and put one in if needed. You’ll probably find that there are other things to concentrate on... enjoy!

First run I used my incredible B&O in ear headphones. Fantastic sound but completely noise cancelling so very dangerous when running outside. Now I have bone conduction phones which don’t go in your ear so you can have a conversation and hear bike bells, run Marshall’s instructions, passing traffic etc.

I did read somewhere that a good playlist increases your output by 14%.

I need all the help I can get.

Oh sounds interesting, never heard of those before. Do you recommend the ones that you got? Maybe I can put on my birthday gift list!

MungoBrush profile image
MungoBrush in reply toCouchpotato2

Yes definitely. At my local running shop they said that they are the only ones allowed at some organised events and they were priced there at just over £100. But I got mine at Costco's for just under £80. Bargain! The sound is good - but of course not comparable to my B&O's. But I can listen to music and carry on a conversation at the same time. Have a look here: costco.co.uk/Electronics-Se...
