Poorly knee

I’m feeling a bit frustrated at the moment as ever since my last run on Sunday I’ve been hobbling around on a sore knee. I read in the guide that aches and pains are quite usual when you first start up so I’m hoping that it sorts itself out soon. I don’t want to fork out for new trainers yet as I’m still only on week 1. I’d be very grateful if anyone has any tips on how to speed up recovery? I’ve been doing the stretches that are recommended and still carrying on walking just not running. Is there anything else I should/could be doing? Thanks in advance!

Follow the link in the guide to PRICE treatment of injuries.

I had some knee pain in the few few weeks, mostly on one side, especially when going downstairs! I understand your reluctance but mine improved massively when I bought proper running shoes with the right support. They cost £80 and now I have to keep on running to justify having spent all that money on these most amazing trainers!

Poor you. As the above say and I would say that I invested in good shoes (with advice from my local shop) and although it’s an investment, I don’t regret it for a second. I can always use them for walking as well and I’ve avoided cramping in my foot, rubbing, knee ache etc. Good luck!

Looks like I will just have to go for it and go to my nearest running shop 🥴 Thank you

Just an update, I ended up going to a physio last week as I couldn’t walk properly on my knee. Turns out it wasn’t anything I could have really helped - there was a muscle in my knee that stops the knee cap from going side to side that wasn’t working as there was no neurological pathway to it! The running just highlighted the problem basically. I’m now doing a lot of different excecises and stretches that should remedy the problem and was told I should be able to run again in about 5weeks.

Ah, that’s frustrating for you but great that the problem has been identified and there is a solution. I had to have physio on my knees due to skewiff kneecaps (trampolining injury) two or three years ago. Week 9 now and I wear knee supports as a precaution and make sure I run ‘softly’, but no issues as yet. Hopefully with the exercises your knee and legs will just get stronger and stronger from here on! Can you go for long brisk walks until you get the all clear to start running again?

PS. Another shout out for good shoes here. Injuries are far more expensive than shoes. And I like to divide the cost of them by the number of runs I do, they soon become extremely good value 😉
