Knee pain!

Hi, I’ve just completed week two! Only the last two runs I’ve started to get throbbing knee pain the whole way through 😫😫😫 absolutely no pain whatsoever on the first four runs... and now it’s pretty much as soon as I start running and then aching all day. This is a huge thing for me as I’ve never run before, I’ve been loving it - just don’t want to give up because of this pain, it’s like my knees are two burning, throbbing balls of pain, it’s awful! Anybody have an ideas how to prevent or ease this? I’m overweight which doesn’t help but that’s the whole reason to be doing this! I’m gutted it’s potentially going to ruin my progress 😢😢😢 my knees have never hurt in my life til now so perhaps they’re in shock or something!! Help! 🙁

Do you have good running shoes? They need to absorb the impact. The amount of pressure is immense on the joints. Also can you run on softer ground?

Good luck I weighed in today - just now down one stone so so worth it. Good luck!!!!

Thankyou! I think my trainers are ok...may have to consider a better pair, any recommendations? Well done on the weight loss, I’m motivated and excited for results! Just need to get past this knee issue 😊

Not sure what happened to my reply before...

Had this problem last time I tried C25K and ended up giving up. This time when it started, at week 3, I went to a specific running shop, had a gait analysis and invested in a pair of good running shoes. Never looked back. Did week 6 run 1 yesterday

Same here. Developed a knee problem half way through C25K and it totally disappeared after a gait analysis. 👍🏼

I had this. I took ibuprofen, particularly one hour before running. I ran through it. It went in a week or so. Very common. Strength needed in thighs. I took advice from my sports physio friend so she assured me I was fine.

I also got a gait analysis towards the end of the program and got proper fitting shoes 👍🏽

Aches and pains are normal at this stage but, prolonged and persistent pain is not...

Your body will complain at this new adventure..and well done you for beginning this:)

Try to land lightly and gently, I call it kissing the ground with your feet..relax and take it as slowly as you like:)

Try these exercises too you may find them useful..many folk have:)

We are not medical experts but we do advice, never run through extreme pain and never run after taking painkillers... they simply mask what may be a real issue:)

I have also had sore knees but they've improved no end since I started doing stretching exercises in w3.

Decades of sitting at a desk have tightened my legs up so that the knee is pulled painfully by running.

But I've got much more flexibility now - started to notice a difference after just a couple of days - and it has helped my knees.

There are lots of helpful YouTube videos to choose from and they all do more or less the same thing.

In case it helps, I also had knee pain early on in the programme. I asked the Sports Therapist who treats my back for advice, and for me the answer proved to be foam rolling of certain tendons (then certain muscles when the pain cropped up elsewhere on my knees later). So knee pain can result for various reasons, and it might be worth asking for advice from a Physio or someone if the problem persists. My knees now cause me no problems at all, but I still keep up the foam rolling routines after running. Good luck sorting this out. 😊
