Festive Mantra 4

Especially for AlMorr - but the rest of you are welcome to join in too !

Good King Wenceslas looked out

On the Feast of Stephen,

Burping on a Brussels sprout

And feeling all uneven.

How he wished he’d never had

That third glass of brandy -

Or the pudding - or the cheese -

Or the Christmas candy !

“Hither, page, and stand by me,

If thou knowest it telling

How a king might healthy be,

And free of this swelling.”

“Couch to 5k is the way,

Majesty, to mend it.

Join with me and start today:

Soon thy griefs are ended.”

“Bring me now some running shoes

And my Fitbit hither !

Thou must teach me how to run

And improve my figure.”

Page and monarch, forth they went,

Forth they went together,

Ignoring each rude comment

And the winter weather.

“Page, my calves are aching now

And my breath grows shorter.

I’m afraid this task will take

Longer than it oughter.”

“Trust the programme, good my liege:

Show determination.

Strength and stamina ‘twill bring,

Fit to rule the nation.”

Nine weeks past, just see them now,

Belting round a parkrun,

Troubles gone from monarch’s brow

And he’s having such fun !

Faith or beauty, gold or land,

Much or none possessing:

Ye who run Couch to 5k

Earn your body’s blessing.

Enjoy !

How do you keep doing it? That's the best yet! AlMorr will love it!

Warped mind, I suspect ! 🤪

It’s good... but I want my own now too! 😛

Pick a tune and I’ll give it a go - as long as I know it !

Anything but that Alexandra Burke thing, caught that on radio 2 this morning and it was painful... switched to podcast quickly!

Xmas by Corey Taylor is my favourite, but I love the classics... Perry Como - white Christmas.

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Don’t know either of the first two, but White Christmas is a possibility. . . Leave it with me !

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toButtercupKid

The Corey one rocks... he’d already said there would be no Christmas song... but then someone got him to do one for Teenage Cancer Trust... it’s different, no way radio 2 will ever play it... just wish they’d have the same opinion of the Alexandra Burke one... bloody awful... worse than Bad News - Cashing in on Christmas, and they’d tried hard to make that suck.

I do love that BCK, you are certainly the best for your running mantras, I put the radio off and sang to the tune Good King Wenceslas🎶🎄🎵 to the words you wrote.

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toAlMorr

Glad you enjoyed it. Such a coincidence you mentioning the song the day I finished it !

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toButtercupKid

How about a better version than what I did to the Twelve Days of Christmas, 🎄 🎶 basically I just copied the original words and added the letter K instead of day, if I had been at school I would have been accused of plagiarism (copying) 😊

Adaptation rather than plagiarism, surely ?!

I think you should do 'I want a hippopotamus for Christmas'.

SaskAlliecatGraduate in reply tokwell39

Yes!!!! I don't know how many times I heard that on the radio today. Of course, I have it on an all Christmas radio station on Sirius right now, but I don't mind hearing that one more than once. It is fun to sing.

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toSaskAlliecat

It’s a good rousing tune to run to, and a nice steady rhythm for it too.

That’s a new one on me ! The mind boggles 😄

Oh no - no-one competes with Tom Lehrer ! The man’s a genius ! A miserable one, but a genius nonetheless 😄

My son just learned this on his euphonium to play for his band Christmas concert. I'll have to sing your version of it, the next time he plays it 😂.

You've topped yourself, once again!

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toSaskAlliecat

That’ll make you popular at his concert 😄 Glad you enjoyed it x

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate in reply toButtercupKid

It’s a good thing he already had his concert 😆. It’s only the family who’ll have to endure it.

Brilliant! Will sing it to my daughter as we run together this morning!

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toRunawaytrainer

Excellent ! If you’ve enough breath to sing and run at the same time you know you’re making progress 😄

Runawaytrainer profile image
RunawaytrainerGraduate in reply toButtercupKid

Daughter wasn't well, so ran on my own. :(

I'd get a cough or a wheeze in the cold weather if I gasped for air. That's partly why I run so slowly. The other part is that I'm not fit enough to go faster! Keep up the good "poetry". Which week are you on now? Following with interest.

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toRunawaytrainer

I’m a snail-style runner too. Just finished week 3 and looking forward to grappling with week 4 !

Runawaytrainer profile image
RunawaytrainerGraduate in reply toButtercupKid

Hey, that's amazing! You're going through the weeks a bit a faster now, aren't you?

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toRunawaytrainer

Yes, making good progress ! Expecting to slow down a bit with week 4 though !

This is truly awesome. Head in to a church carol service later and might have to crack out the alternative version. I am not going to be able to remain composed at the thought of those Brussel sprouts...

ButtercupKid profile image
ButtercupKidGraduate in reply toRunforestrun18

Try to stick with the original in church, or you may cause massive confusion - or perhaps jogging in the aisles 😄

Runforestrun18 profile image
Runforestrun18Graduate in reply toButtercupKid

Hehe, there are around 60 kids under 11 in my church. Add fairy lights, nativity costumes, glitter, general Christmas hyperactivity and copious quantities of sugar to the mix and you have a new definition of the word mayhem. Pretty sure I could cartwheel down the aisle singing the hokey kokey and no one would bat an eyelid!!
