First try outside & failed!!

On week 7r2 so up to ruining for 25 mins. Have managed that and all weeks on a treadmill in the gym & thought I'd give it a go outside. The pain in my calves was awful & only managed about 7 mins running, the rest I walked. Plan to redo the run back in the gym, but was shocked at how hard I found it 😳 😥

That’s no fail... well done coming outside and giving it a go. Did you run on paths? Maybe better on something softer next time out... but I’d complete the programme on the treadmill to be honest... work on the transition when 30 minutes is comfortable, a couple of weeks after graduation.

Yes it was the pavement.

Soft grass may be easier as there’s less of a difference impact wise, but it also slows you down a bit... there’s no best surface

Hey you didnt fail! You tried something new and it didn't go completely to plan but that's ok. You'll have learnt something and use that to good effect next time.

The transition from treadmill to running outside can be difficult. Surfaces are harder and more uneven, then some bugger goes and puts a hill in the way! :) Generally you will run faster outside as well, as you dont have the treadmill to regulate your pace.

I'm on week 7 too. I started off outside then as its got dark moved to the treadmill so i'd only done the continuous runs indoors. On Monday i ran outside and i was all over the place. I couldn't get my breath and when slowing down couldn't maintain the slower pace, so didn't complete w7r2. I'm going back on the treadmill tonight to establish what my comfortable pace is then on Friday i'm going back outside but with a metronome set at my treadmill pace to see if that gets me round. It may work, it may not. But as @Unfitnomore told me on Monday. Any run is better than no run :)

Good luck with your next run x

Try stretching exercises and hydrate well, as in at least 3 litres of water every day. It will all settle down, don't worry.

I did my first 2 weeks outside, then due to childcare I got a treadmill and did the next few weeks on that. Week 6 I tried to run outside and found it so hard, slowed to almost walking pace several times and felt rubbish. The hills killed me. The next day my calves were really painful.....and then I went back to the treadmill.

Week 9r1 I ran outside again and did just shy of 5k....was nice to be out as felt cooler while running, but the hills had got me again and again the next day my legs hurt. I did w9r2 on the treadmill and really really struggled on that for some reason.

So I went back outside for my graduation run and did the full 5k...felt amazing. I haven't been back on the treadmill since, I've been making time to run outside as I love it. I just make sure I've stretched enough before and after and then my legs are fine.

Yesterday I did 5.5k and tomorrow I'm doing my first parkrun...... So can't wait! 😁
