W6 R3 completed (yay!) - but am I doing it right?

Good day, fellow runners! I’m after some advice (and reassurance, I think!)

I’ve always wanted to run, but always hated every attempt made, and C5k has made me do it! After completing W5R3 with *relative* ease I was looking forward to pushing myself even further, but W6R3 was sooo much harder. What I worry about is the fact that there is NO WAY I could talk whilst running, so am I doing it wrong? I certainly don’t go too fast, and I’m rather overweight (although I have lost 7lbs since starting this), and the park where I run is on a slight hill so my route goes up and down as I circle it.

I just want to make sure I’m doing it right, because I felt like I was going to pass out in the last couple of minutes of today’s run!

It's amazing what five minutes can do, you found W5R3 relatively easy but W6R3 which is only five minutes longer was much harder and you could not talk at all. As you say you weren't going too fast. I found that week 8 which is only three minutes longer than week 7 pretty hard as well because of those extra three minutes. You will probably find that the three 25 minute runs of week 7 are easier and you will be able to talk while running, I assume you are running with someone.

Thanks! And no, I run alone, so I don’t really need to talk :). But it seems like many people are mentioning that being able to talk is a sign of the “right” speed, so I always ask myself - could I hold a conversation at this level? Anything above 8 minutes makes me speechless.

(Oh god, these week 7 spoilers have made me dread my next run haha)

I also run alone, talking to yourself seems strange, I sort of lip synched to my favourite tracks, if I couldn't manage I was going too fast, you can ALWAYS go slower!🐌🐌🐌

I haven’t plucked up the courage to run to music! I worry it will make me want to go faster to the rhythm! Do you find music helps?

Yes, it's a distraction, I don't run to the beat, then again I was never good at dancing to it 🤯💃💃

Sorry for these week 7 "spoilers" Lynn but they are the same length as you have already ran on week 6 run 3. Just take the pace a little slower and I think you should not feel so tired once you complete them

I know you say you are not going fast BUT I really think you are still a bit too quick for your lungs 😀 as you cannot talk. Those slight hills will have an effect as you go longer too.

As long as you are moving forward and making the running motion, the speed is totally irrelevant. It is possible to run a lot slower the your fast walk and is the right thing to do, honest. I’ve not quite been overtaken by a snail but it’s been close.

Longer runs call for slower speeds while you learn to do them.

Thank you! It’s actually been a wonderful journey, but struggled today. I run *with* Michael Johnson, and on the last 60 seconds he said, “if you can, go faster and finish this week on a high!” And I thought, NO WAY, so felt like I was finishing on a low. Not great for my fragile self esteem!

But thanks for the advice, I will watch my pace more closely.

That was when I fell out with sexy Mr Johnson: in fact I felt like hitting him when he said to go faster 😂 A year on, Im only now working on speed, with two public races and numerous 10k plus runs under my belt, so slow down for now, finish c25k, then consolidate your runs before pushing speed or distance. I know you weren’t deliberately pushing speed, but try slower. I was once overtaken by an elderly gent on a Zimmer frame. Mind you, if i could run fast I would 🤪 The main thing is you’re doing really well and enjoying the journey. I promise you these confidence wobbles will get less and less as you gain experience and spread your wings. I used to wail on this forum (you should have seen my week 4 rant!) but now I just shrug it off. Every run you do is teaching you more, building muscle and stamina, putting km in the running bank. It will all balance out, I promise x

Wow! Sounds like you’ve achieved so much in a year! I can only hope to do so well 💪 I do get overtaken by just about everyone, from squirrels to baby prams, but I don’t mind (mostly)...

Some people who started at the same time as me are doing half marathons or marathons now, and they all felt like you do now at one point or another. You’re going to be fine 😊❤️❤️

Haha! I remember the moment when Laura said to finish by going faster so well! I think I might just have given her some not nice language back! Don’t push yourself as you are in the early stages at the moment. All that will come later! You are doing well, just slow down a little!

Sounds like you're doing fine but I would try and slow down a bit, it will make it easier. As for running at an easy conversational pace.... yeah right. That came much later for me, probably about a month after week 9. When I started C25K brisk walking made easy conversation tricky. The slowest you can go is running on the spot, combine that with any sort of forward motion and you are running. Run like a Loris!

Well, something is working! You can run 25 and the first 20 are relatively easy! Keep doing it just the way you are... soon you’ll be at 30 and then more. Once you’ve graduated and consolidated that 30 minutes, I’d put my house in you being able to run 15 minutes and chat at the same time, and also 15 minutes at increased speed. You’re doing just great... on this and the weight loss. Be very proud of yourself and enjoy these last few weeks, they really consolidate what you’ve done so far in time for graduation. You got this.

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and explains the recommended easy conversational pace.

If you cannot speak clear ungasping sentences as you run, then you are going too fast for this stage of your running life.

It may seem counter intuitive but stamina is built by running slowly.

You can build pace when you have developed basic endurance.
