I am 7 stone overweight 59 year old and have just finished day one.
I was very out of breath after the first minute run and found that I didn’t recover during the 90 second walk. So by the end I was really gasping for breath.
Anyway I persevered, I hope it gets easier,
Friday for my next attempt.
My daughter is now up to 5k she has inspired and encouraged me. I feel as if I am not alone

Well done! That first run is the hardest!! And the first week is the toughest. I had to repeat a couple of runs. It may help to slow down your run, slow and steady is the mantra around here. Every run builds on the run before. It’s great to have that inspiration and support. You will get a lot here too. Apparently runners are lovely people 😀. Keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. Soon you’ll be hitting the 5k with her 😄
Well done on starting the couch to 5K. I’m over 18 stone and I have just done week 5 run 2, running for 8 minutes! I too thought each run was impossible, but it is amazing to see how your body changes and adapts as you stick with it. I go so slowly that my hubby and 9 year old daughter can’t stay with me as they find they can’t run that slow. But I am faster than sitting on the sofa! You can do it too. You really can.
I was so breathless during the first runs, but by taking thinks slow, trying to relax into it and ensuring deeper breaths and not panting helped.
Hello Mother! This post made me shed a little tear, I feel proud to have inspired you to start Couch to 5K seen as you have inspired me my whole life.
You can do this, and you already are doing this! You’ve done the worst part which is making yourself get out there and actually do it, but guess what... you’ve done it!
I really am proud of you and you soon will feel so so so proud of yourself for what your achieving. Your an amazing and strong woman so I know you’ll get through this and we have each other as well.
Believe in yourself, trust the process and keep going. I’m here with you.
Love love love you more than anything in the world xxxx
And THAT post made me shed a little tear StudentNursee!! What a lovely inspiring story and well done to you Karenshann for getting started on this amazing programme - you won't regret it! I'm 58 and 3 stone overweight and the only exercise I've done for years is walking the dog! But I'm now about to start Wk8 of C25K, I can run 25 mins with ease and am running around 2.75K per run at the moment. I haven't lost any weight, but I feel so much better, it has encouraged me to adopt a healthier diet, my concentrating and energy has improved and I honestly can't wait for each run day - I'm up and out in my running gear early because I love running first thing, it's such a joy and has brought so much else into my life other than the heath benefits :o) So, keep at it, follow the programme religiously and in a few weeks you will have amazed yourself about what your body - and mind - can do! As everyone says, take it slowly, it's not a competition, just let your body do what it was designed to do, nature is a wonderful thing!! :o)
Great story! I'm a few years older than you and was nearly 3 stone heavier than ideal. I agree that the programme is a great discipline that makes it easier to start introducing healthier foods and hydration. I didn't lose much weight during C25K but I did get a bit trimmer around the middle. Since progressing to 10k and continuing a healthy eating approach the pounds have fallen off (about a stone and a half so far) which is two inches off my waistline. Just as weight creeps up on us, it comes off at the same slow rate but the energy and sense of achievement we get from running is a great motivator.
i'm 11 years older than you, also very overweight and thought i would never get through that first week. But now I've only got one run to do before I finish! Trust the programme even though when you look at it it seems impossible.
I am 58, 5 stone overweight and on Week 6! You can do this!!! Slow and steady is the key - I do my running on a treadmill, and my walk is at 4.2kph, my run at 5.2kph - very very slow but still running and I'm still doing it!!! Google slow jogging - there is a Japanese chap who has pioneered this method of running and its perfect for us larger ladies (and men!). Good luck, you can do it and it will change your life!!!
Great start... slow it down a touch and breathing will be easier. You just did the hardest run... I hope you’re proud of yourself as well as your amazing daughter!
I am also very overweight and have about the same amount to lose. When I started C25K I really struggled with 1 minute intervals. I continued to plod on (usually at a snails pace) and now 16lb lighter I will complete my final run of the programme tomorrow! The feeling of achievement is amazing so stick with it, each week brings its own challenge, but if you follow the advice of the guys on here with more experience, listen to your body and complete the programme step by step as it is intended you will complete each run and feel amazing x
Hi. I too am like you. I was exhausted after W1R1. I am now on W3R3 and managed to run for a whole 3 mins! My recovery time is getting shorter and even though I am on holiday next week I am keeping it up. You are doing amazingly just getting going. As as I have seen written ‘Even if you run slowly you are still going faster than someone sat on a couch!’
Yay you! Keep us posted on your progress. And you can repeat any week before you move onto the next week, if you need to. In an ideal world we'd all be doing our 3 runs a week and getting the whole thing done in 9 weeks - and many people do that (I didn't, it took me longer) - but life gets in the way sometimes. Take it slow and steady and you will so reap the benefits. Everyone's cheering you on!
Karen well done!!! When I started I was early 40’s not over weight but I felt sick and struggled to catch my breath convinced after my first run I thought I would never do it either but you will!!! The whole thing is cleverly designed to slowly build. I’m super excited for you and will be looking forward to hearing how tomorrow and the remaining weeks go! Keep at it Karen 🏃♀️ 😊
Well done, the first one is the hardest and you’ve done it👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 As you will have seen, lots of us started not in the first flush of youth and carrying extra weight, but the programme is absolutely fantastic. Just follow it exactly as set out and take it slowly and you’ll get there.
Congratulations. I thought that I might die after W1R1. It’s just a first step as your daughter knows and I bet she is really proud of your achievement. Keep it up
