Shin pain question

Hi all

I am hoping you lovely people can help me. I graduated at the end of May, and have been running 3 times a week since then, usually 2 x 20 mins then a half hour one. All has been well until a couple of weeks ago, when the day after a run both legs ached and I had a soreness at the front of my left shin. It doesn't hurt when I run, but has been aching on and off.

I have been away on holiday to Greece for the past week so not run for the past 11 days, but plenty of walking. It was hurting sometimes when I was walking, then not so much. Been pain free for the past 2 days, back home now, but not sure whether to start running again, but desperate to not loose fitness.

All advice greatly received thanks x

It is not clear that this is caused by running and assuming that you have proper running shoes and haven't radically changed your training recently, it is unusual for shin splints to show up after you have been running for such a period of time. If it is shin splints, this may be helpful runnersworld.com/shin-splints/

As with any pain, it is not good to try to run through it, although most of us have to put up with niggly aches from time to time. If it persists then get checked out by a GP or physio.

Hi

Thanks, I do have proper shoes and not changed my training. Still pain free so I am planning to try a gentle run in the next few days and see how it goes. I am thinking it's not shin splint too, so will see how things progress. Thanks for your words of wisdom.

Maybe try running on a softer surface, if you usually run on tarmac ? Going just a little slower can help too. Hope the problem clears up soon x

Thanks so much, I do run on tarmac, but might try to include more grass and see if that helps.

Just to say, he run went well, ran on grass and smaller steps for 20 mins. Then did a 30 minute one and all is fine now, so it looks like it was just an annoying niggle after all, so happy again thanks.
