Its been 2 months since my last post, I had a problem with my hip last time so had some time away from running.
I'm now back running, I decided to join a running club in my local area, only started 2 weeks ago. How unfit am I, I was knackered just after the warm up let alone running for 45 minutes.
I was the last one at the back of the group all the time. When I saw all the runners coming back I thought we were going back again, the back marker said no they are coming back for us, no-one gets left behind, I was so embarrassed and kept apologizing as they must of came back 4 times or more!!
This week was a lot better and I feel I ran better, still walking now and again but more running, they only came back twice for me. I cant get my breathing right, I don't feel that I can get enough breath in and feel I am really gasping for breath all the time. The noises that im making, there was an ambulance that went passed with its lights flashing I through someone had called it for me!!
Does anyone have any tips they can give me on breathing please???
I think if I can control my breathing I should be able to run further. We hope so anyway.
I'm still having problems with my left hip hurting after running, it hurts for at least 2 days, before the pain starts to fade. I still think its due to uneven ground but if anyone else has had the same problem what did you do to solve the problem??

Ok I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but I think you should forget about the running club for the moment.
Start with Week 1 Run 1 and work your way through the C25K plan. When you graduate and get to running for 30 mins then join back with your running club. It will make such a difference and will be so much more enjoyable.
By the way, the running club seems great and amazingly supportive.
Breathing takes time, it just clicks when your fitness improves. For me personally it clicked at about week 6. I was still making noises and gasping,😀 but the burning feeling in my lungs was gone. Muscle ache and difficulty breathing go when your level of fitness increases.
Start at the start and keep it slow and steady.
I had a break from running earlier in the year due to my hip and back pain which was caused by my hip. Turns out my hip was slightly dislocated and a few sessions with a Physiotherapist sorted it out. No hip pain and no back pain thankfully anymore. I am back running now again, but building back slowly. I am also in a running club but not fit enough to be out pounding the pavement with a running group.
Thanks for your comments all noted, even when I graduated on 5k back in May I was still having trouble breathing. I know a lot is to do with fitness levels, but would like to keep going with the club as I feel I am getting support from others and I need the push. Its not something I can do on my own again.
I hear you. I know where your coming from. I graduated last year in June. I’ve had 2 breaks from running since. It’s hard getting back into it. I just started walking and running 5k until I was back running it all. Best wishes, and enjoy running with the club.👍
Oh and if you have not had a gait analysis yet at an independent running shop try that. It may be that your running shoes may not be right for you which may be causing your hip pain.
I completed the couch to 5k originally on the treadmill and never suffered from hip pain its only seems to happen when I go out road runner, so not sure if its the trainers but will check with the shops. Thanks
You may need the hip looked at by a physio. I don’t think, unless you’re near a run and become, a shop can help as they’d put you on the treadmill and you don’t have an issue there. How uneven is the ground you’re running on? If we’re talking trail running then you’d need different shoes for that than the treadmill in all likelihood... if it’s undulations on pavements then you don’t.
Breathing I still find is best not thought about... I listened to comedy podcasts for a couple of runs so they needed my concentration... and I didn’t die... so that gave me confidence and now when I know my breathing is up I don’t panic.
Its just running on pavements but these days your be lucky to find flat pavements, the pavements have so many joins or bumps on them. I'm trying to run in the middle so its a little bit flatter.
I'm trying to breath through the noise and out through the mouth but this isn't going too well.
If your pain is always on one side, then it sounds like you have a physical asymmetry or susceptibility on one side. Running on pavements is likely to exacerbate this, due to more impact stresses than running on the treadmill, but it is your body's reaction which is causing the issue, not the pavements themselves.
That said, it is well known that runners who always run the same route on the same side of heavily cambered roads can develop asymmetries........the solution, turn round and run in the other direction.
The simple answer to breathing issues is to run slow enough to enable full deep breaths, without which you cannot supply enough oxygen to your muscles. As you get fitter the pace at which you can manage this will get faster.
Thank you so much for your comments. I will have a look at the link you sent. I have joined a running club and we have done different routes each time. It's just me I think!!😢
Ah Banksy I can imagine the frustration you must be feeling. Big hugs! 🤗 It’s clearly something that you’re determined to get sorted and that’s a big credit to you. I’m not sure how I’d feel about the other runners turning back to be honest. (Though I can see how supportive they all are 😍). I’d be a bit concerned about pushing harder than I should because of the circumstances. Maybe consider mixing it up with some practice runs on your own and see how you feel then too. Physio sounds like a good suggestion too. Hopefully you’ll find the running remedy soon! Best wishes to you! ❤️
