Has anyone got any tips for the best way to breath when running please? I find usually my legs will let me keep going but mu lungs struggle. They are getting better, as I have noticed in my walks that I am recovering faster, but whilst running I do struggle a little. Sanj, the chap in my ear says he times his breathing with ever 4th step of his left foot, but I tried that and got a bit confused hahahah

THe chap in my ear made an interesting point that if you were to imagine jogging along a fence and someone was the other side, they should not be able to tell that you are jogging/running, point being , not to bounce too much when you run as that uses up extra energy. That's difficult to do though, trying not to bounce up when jogging/running
I remember that tip always. By peering over that high hedge you keep your frame from slumping. If you do find yourself slumping then peer over that hedge 🙂
To be honest, I tried to time my breathing in time with my steps, but I couldn’t. I also can’t breathe in through my nose, either. I just mouth breathe when I need to. After the Toxic Ten, or even during it, my breathing tends to even out, as my body adjusts to the oxygen requirement. Do try to breathe deeply, though, not panting using the upper part of your lungs.
If you lie on the floor, put your hands on your abdomen, and feel what happens when you relax and breathe naturally. Your abdomen expands, drawing air into the bottom of your lungs. Remember how this feels, and duplicate it as you run. It takes a bit of practice, as we all tend to use only the top of our lungs when sitting down or relaxing. When exercising, we need as much air as possible, so this is where “abdominal breathing“ comes into play. I hope this helps. 😊

As others say - slow down. First trick for me was learning that my brisk walk could be faster than my run!
I run using the Japanese slow jogging technique - it’s low impact and completely sorts the breathing out. I run this way all the time, but think it’s s great technique for beginners. Elite athletes & marathon runners do a lot of their training this way - as slow running is great for building strength and stamina. Hope it helps!
I saw a post of yours on this the other day and now raring to try it. Once I've recovered from an ankle sprain I'm all in for it. Can I ask what running shoes you use? Have you gone more minimalist since using this technique? My clunky stability trainers are on the way out and I'm wondering if I should go minimal next time...thanks for the inspo anyway
I had my gait analysis done & bought pricey running shoes before seeing this, so I do use them. But gave taken care to land lightly and on the front mid foot land. There are ‘barefoot’ running shoes out there but they’re very expensive. So when I’ve worn out these shoes I was going to go for something basic, rather than pricey. Just make sure there’s room at the toe (maybe half a size up?). If you see something reasonable - let me know!
And as MG said, make sure you're breathing all the way down to your tippy toes (or the bottom of your lungs if that's easier )☺
To be honest, my breathing sorts itself out. I don't count and I don't time it. If I need a bit more I breathe a bit quicker and if I don't I don't). I figure (probably wrongly) that my distances covered at the moment do not require special breathing techniques and my nose is often too runny or inflzmmed with allergies to even consider nose breathing.
I do nose breathe when not doing sport but I can't get what I need in when running.
Ahhhh thank you very much! I was more aware of my breathing last night on my run and I noticed that I only take longer deeper breaths when I need it, coming to the end of an actual run. I cannot nose breath when running, that I do know, I don't think I would get very far if I had too haha.
