Running Apps

I’m on week 4 and was wondering if people who use a tracking app (like Strava or Map my Run etc) start the app when they begin the 5 mins warm up or when they start the run - also do you track the 5 mins cool down or turn off after run?

I just do the run

I started off including the warm up and cool down walks, but these days I start it when I start running and finish when I finish running. I get the accurate figures for my actual running times that way. I don't think there is a wrong or right way, just whatever you prefer 😊

I use MapMyRun, and before I graduated I’d use it alongside the C25K app, and start them going at the same time - I have a delayed start of 5 minutes on MMR, so that would account for the 5 minute warmup.

When MJ used to stay Go, MMR kicked in pretty much at the same time, then I’d stop it manually when I finished the run (so not include the cool down walk).

Sorry, a bit convoluted, but hopefully you get my drift! 😅👍🏻

Hmmm. Good question. I do the whole thing but I am beginning to think that just the run would be more sensible.

I’m on Nike and only track the run... especially if using one of their guided runs as my soundtrack for the day.

Yeah Nike run club for me to. I find it easy to use and give lots of useful info such as

Elevation gain

Pace

Splits

Average km times

Rote map

Total KMs run

Total runs

tracks your achievements eg

Fastest 5 K

fastest 1 k

Fastest mile etc

Lots of content and guided runs

Its very good IMO and best of all its free

Either way is fine. Its being able to see tour progress over the weeks that I think is more important. So however you measure it measure it the same way each week. You will then get to see yourself (mostly) getting faster or travelling further.

I count the five minutes at start and end. It means my overall pace is always slower than my ‘actual’ running speed but I find being able to include the distance travelled during the warm up and cool down has really helped to motivate me. I don’t think (at the moment at least) I would be able to run fast enough to complete 5k in final run time given for week 9 but I just *might* be able to do it if I add on five minutes brisk walking either side.

I tried putting Strava on to my iPod but it's so ancient it won't install as the version of iOS is too old. I guess there's an excuse to treat myself to the new iPhone when I graduate. 😂😂

Thanks everyone- I’ve been tracking everything, but think I’m going to change to just the run part 👍🏻

I use a combination of the FitBit and Strava to map the whole walk/run.

I have been wanting to see how "fast" my run pace was so considered just recording without the warm-up/cool-down but, on both, you can easily work out which sections you were running on and see the pace on the log...

I track the lot. Except when I’ve done the park runs as part of it then I just track from the first run

I’ve always wondered this too! I start mine when I start the 5 min warm up and end it after the 5 min cool down. Not sure that’s getting my “running” distance thought. Would be interested to know what others do.

I started Strava at the beginning of the warm up but turned off at the beginning of the warm down as there was something exhilarating about stopping a run and the app together! Not sure why!!! Either way, I would personally stick with what you've started doing through the programme as it means you can easily track your progress as the weeks go on.

After I finished the programme I began to just start the app just before starting to trot!
