Running in the rain is fantastic 😊 keep you cool during your run

Do you not end up freezing afterwards? I hate being cold. Although wondering if I’m just coming up with excuses here and should just get out and get on with it.

Just have a shower afterwards you'll be fine 😊

I wear a cap to protect rain dropping into eyes. You'll just need to try the running in the rain to see how you feel about it but for most they love it

Erm...maybe so, in August...but if you get drenched in January things can get nasty if you don’t get dry and warm soon... l found myself in a situation where l had to stop running, being totally spent, and was more than a kilometre away from my car, wet and battered by wind. That’s far from fun...

I was referring to general august with my reply.

Everyone different so the only way we all know if we like or dislike running in the rain is to to try it 🏃🏃‍♀️😃

The alternative is to go to gym or a friend who has treadmill they'll kindly let you use. Even without a gym membership you can pay as you go at most these days so if weather don't permit a run I'm sure the gym or friend can help.

As for winter months there is winter light weight running clothes we should try to invest in before it's here. After this weather past few days I'm shopping tomorrow to get a step ahead. The thought of weather or anything stopping me from my runs scares me 🏃‍♀️

Well, here I came with very much the same thoughts for my run tomorrow morning! I’m guessing it’s probably like ripping off a plaster, once you’re a bit wet, you’re a bit wet. Have you got moisture wicking kit to wear? That may help?

Go! Running in the rain is a lot of fun ahah, and idk about you but once I come in I’m always jumping in the bath/shower anyway!

Ye same here il get hubby to run me a bath for when I come back. In serious need of motivation today.

Sortyourlife in reply tojessieb887

Hehe that’s what I do too! When I start my cool down walk I text my boyfriend to start running me a bath 😂

Which run are you on? You’ll be fine once you’re out there, it’s just getting your bum out of the door ☺️

I’m meant to be doing week 4 run 2 tonight! I missed a week so I’m repeating week 4, I just ended up busy all the time happens with 3 kiddiwinks. And I can only run at night I’ve tried other points in the day and I can’t seem to manage it!

Sortyourlife profile image
Sortyourlife in reply tojessieb887

Yeah that’s completely understandable ! Honestly though I would maybe just try and start week 5 ☺️ if you completed all of week 4 then just go for it! You shouldn’t loose any fitness with anything less than a 2 week break. My post grad runs are becoming more spaced out (I went out Monday night, and then only done my next run this evening) yet I found this run the easiest post grad one.

Worst that happens is you don’t make it to the end then you can make a call on whether to just try that one again, or go back and repeat a week.

Hope that makes some sort of sense!

Tbf it’s the first time I’ve ran in the rain today, and it was only light. I would probably run in anything though I think, and anything that makes it cooler is a bonus !

Wait until the rain goes off, some people do love to run in the rain, I don't. During my C25K program, there was only 1 day that I postponed a run due to the rain, I intended to run it at 9am, but like you I waited until the rain went off and ran the week 9 run 2 at about 2 in the afternoon when the rain went off, it's up to you, but by the tone of your post, I think you don't really want to get wet.

jessieb887 profile image
jessieb887Graduate in reply toAlMorr

It’s not the getting wet bit to be honest its the being cold afterwards I hate being cold and it takes me hours to warm back up. It’s started absolutely chucking it down damn weather I had vowed to make sure I left less of a gap in between runs but life keeps getting in the way.

It depends where you run. If you finish close to home you can go straight in to a hot bath or shower and then into dry clothes so it hardly matters. I tend to run in a straight line though, then walk all the way back, so if it's raining I'll need to be more disciplined about turning back at half way, that's all. What does concern me is parkrun as then my nice hot shower and dry clothes are a 20 minute drive away from the finish and I do have a slight concern that if I'm really soaked through that could be dangerous as the discomfort might distract me from my driving. Ironically I might have to brave running in shorts in the winter as at least bare legs can be dried with a towel, unlike the joggers I wear now :)

Ye I decided after the repeat of run 1 that I wasn’t ready for week 5 I really struggled. So going to stick to completing week 4 again. I have finally made the decision to run tomorrow instead we’re off out for the day tomorrow and it’s pretty flat where we’re going so think il do it then.

Best cooling you can get... never liked it in winter... I just need a way to get warm before freezing water I guess.

Now this is something I’m going to look into although wouldn’t know where to look round by me without it costing the earth.

Think it's something us new runners are going to have to get used to. We've been spoilt by all the glorious weather we've had. If we wait for the rain to pass we could be taking weeks between runs as the autumn comes!! 🌧🌧🌧

jessieb887 profile image
jessieb887Graduate in reply toSANDI_runs

Ye your right there I didn’t go in the end opted for a lush bath bomb bath instead I was cold just thinking about going out. Back to it tomorrow as I annoyed myself not going out tonight so come what may il be running in it!

SANDI_runs profile image
SANDI_runsGraduate in reply tojessieb887

Well the forecast for me says rain tomorrow, and I will be out in it whatever the weather. Will be my first run in the rain.

Am contemplating getting a treadmill for the winter months

Polly2810 profile image
Polly2810Graduate in reply toSANDI_runs

I did that last year....it stands as a good clothes horse now 🤣🤣I hate the “dreadmill” bores me! Off out in the rain as soon as mr p wakes up!!

SANDI_runs profile image
SANDI_runsGraduate in reply toPolly2810

That's why I say contemplating Polly. As I am not actually sure if I would use it. Need to see how I get on running out there as the poorer weather comes. I know it doesn't bother me to wrap up and go out to walk the dog, but obviously won't be wrapping up to run.

Polly2810 profile image
Polly2810Graduate in reply toSANDI_runs

I totally get that, it was pretty steady this morning, but I figure oh well I’m wet now so what the heck and the shower once home was bliss!! 😊 the dreadmill may be dusted off once the weather gets really bad although last winter stuck me lightweight jacket on added a hat and gloves and loved it! Just means can’t go on my beloved cycle path as pitch black so round the streets instead. Just see how you go some people swear my the treadmill I just miss the fresh air. 😊

Rain when you are already out, is fine..heading out in a light drizzle is fine..heading out in torrential rain takes a bit more passion...:)

But..it is just wet... and you get dry quickly and when it is colder... a lovely hot shower is sheer bliss:)

mrrun profile image
mrrunGraduate in reply toOldfloss

I’m getting kinda confused here, dizzy even. A few days ago we read how some disliked all that sun and heat nonsense. Now the wet is the new dry. What next? Complaining that running in sleet is cold? Or gale wind is an obstacle ‘cause it messes up with hair? Considering the evidence I’d suggest that the best way to keep fit is to follow some of Rignold’s routines (100 push-ups, 250 presses and 350 squats) and stick to good ol’ air conditioned gyms.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply tomrrun

I like the sun and I like the rain, the snow and the hail and the wind... :)

Not icy conditions though... and right now I would settle fora short run, up a hill in a gale with torrential rain followed by a heat wave on the way down :)

Love running in the rain (and I usually hate running!) - especially when it's a little cooler, and you can actually see steam coming off your body when you stop!

I love rain running, i always imagine I'm in a music video or dramatic film and find it helps propel me a long a bit!

I’m shortly going to see if I like running in the rain or not! Only had to contend with one light drizzle run to date, but it’s coming down pretty hard here! 😳

My dilemma is, do I run in a jacket or not? Hate being too hot and I’m not coordinated enough to take it off whilst running! 🤔🤔😀🏃‍♀️

Polly2810 profile image
Polly2810Graduate in reply tocheekychipmunks

That comes with practice. I’ve got it down to a fine art now although I tend to not bother a lot of the time soon warms up. 😊

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate in reply toPolly2810

I didn’t bother! It wasn’t raining hard enough to warrant it, although I know the time will come! 💦💦💦

Yes very true!! I didn’t bother this kitting either was a little nippy to start with but gigs once we got moving! 🌦

I asked the same question a few weeks ago. Since then I’ve done 2 10ks in the pouring rain, in shorts and a vest and really enjoyed it! It was around 15 degrees so not cold and I enjoy the feeling of the rain on my skin. I did have a cap on to protect my eyes. Didn’t bother with a jacket because I get so warm.

jessieb887 profile image
jessieb887Graduate in reply tosarah65

Think I’m going to have to get me cap a few have mentioned it now don’t think the kids would approve of me stealing there’s to get it soaked lol

jessieb887 profile image
jessieb887Graduate

I didn’t go last night but I’m so glad I didn’t and not because of the rain! been at Blackpool air show today and it was mentally draining so busy so was constantly watching the kids! So so glad I could get out tonight feel refreshed almost and I’m just walking home now so that’s without the shower to freshen up 😊 head officially cleared of the chaos of the day 😊
