I have been quite pleased with my progress up till now been running outdoors up to W8 R1 which I completed fine with a pace of 6'09''/km.
Because of all the snow I attempted W8 R2 on the treadmill in the gym setting the speed at 9.2 km/h which I think is a little slower than my W8 R1 pace. I could not keep it up and had to slow to a walk three times during the 28 minute run. Heartrate went up to 168 compared to a max of 162 on previous runs. I also felt uncomfortably hot.
It's still icy out so will attempt the treadmill again today but am kinda dreading it. Im interested in how others find treadmill compared to outdoors, is the problem I am having common?
Thanks,

In general folks find the treadmill easier than running outside, the trick is to make sure the treadmill is set to 1% incline to be as close to outdoor running as possible, this compensates for the treadmill doing a lot of the work and you not having to push off.
If you are finding the ‘mill harder check the incline isn’t too high and also don’t forget the psychological and physiological differences with being kept at that steady 9.2, it’s a different head game and a lot of this running lark is in the noggin.
I run on the mill and outside 50/50 so find them fairly interchangeable
Its not unusual to find a treadmill run harder than an outdoor run. Build up of body heat that's not readily dissipated makes the running feel uncomfortable and knocks up your heart rate even with a fan on.
I don't think I've ever ran fast on a treadmill compared to outside but I find it useful for recovery runs and the odd interval session. Music helps to push through and takes your mind off the monotony. I would set the pace at a slower speed and do around 10 mins and see how you feel and if you feel the need to go faster just up the speed a couple of tenths. Looking at your pacing I'd start around 8.5 - 8.7kph and gradually build up for a fast finish session
I find the treadmill way harder! I did the whole programme on the treadmill and didn't venture outside until after graduation. I was prepared for it to be harder judging by what everyone said, but I found my natural pace was about a minute faster per km than I could do on the treadmill. Nowadays I train truce a week on the treadmill and once outside. I vary between 6-7min per km outside but I can't sustain anywhere near these speeds on the treadmill! I still like the treadmill as you can control so much on it like gradient or sprint intervals, but I've just accepted for whatever reason I find it harder. I think it's because I get so hot on it, and if you get too hot it affects your Heart rate.
Ignore the arithmetic, it can mislead sometimes.🤔You were running the equivalent of 10k/hr pace according to my sums for your 28 min wk8 Run.🤔
Running is Running, from FAQ Posts.🌟
May I suggest the C25k simple programme guide lines and requirements apply to Indoors and Outdoors and when transferring also.🌟
They are both resources , whichever suits,to be used in building a running body, which for Newbies in the C25k is about an endurance target of 30 minutes running at any pace.🌟
I would suggest just apply the basic approach of the C25k to whatever stage you are at whether In or Out.🤔
Slow and steady and give yourself the time to adapt and train not only your body, but how you communicate and listen to it also.
I do not rush either Indoors or Outdoors, I find I need the time.🤔
Sorry for that and thank you for posting this, I think you maybe been mislead by arthimetic, another pesky gremlin💩
Good luck, your doing great.
Put this one down to that and if you wish to give it another opportunity try a 5min warm up run at one degree and find a comfortable pace and enjoy.👍👏👏
Know many very competent retired marathon runners,it’s there one pleasure now,Treadmill. Some avoid that and only use non impact gym equipment.
The person who holds every fell record in the UK uses a treadmill at full incline for 90 mins per day to build the legs and body he needs.
Past winner of Dragons Back. google it.Hardest race in the world , 200 miles in 5 days across the Welsh mountains. They even run across the Crib Goch Arête. Unbelievable but also inspiring.
Thanks all for taking the time to reply. Just done W8 R3 on the treadmill and it was much better.
I think, as a few of you said, I started at too high a pace last time so never got comfortable. This time I started at 8.5 km/h and increased when I felt I could. Looking forward to W9 R1 now. Likely to again be a treadmill run, it just wont stop snowing!
