Well said - I am so laid back daytime, I would need to run horizontally! And then come 8pm, I am suddenly full of vim and vigour. It's all a learning curve.
Hi there. Thank you so much for this. It’s easy to think it’s only me who’s struggling - particularly when you read posts from people who seem to be able to keep going. I went out at 7pm last night and tried for the first time to do Laura’s C25k+ but I had to keep stopping. It was very demoralising. It was 26 degrees but at the time I didn’t take this into account - I just felt I’d taken a massive step backwards and I was never going to progress. I’m gonna give it another go tomorrow. Thanks for the positive message!
I felt like i was the only one too! I even came off the forum for a while coz i felt like everyone was doing better than me! Good luck & look after yourself.
But we’re here ready to support you through it. Just be honest about the highs and lows and someone will lift you when you need it - I would’ve fallen off the programme weeks before the end otherwise. Sending virtual hugs. But loose ones because heat!
9K? Wow - that’s brilliant. I have joined - I snuck in & joined the dark side - naughty me! But I haven’t posted yet. I can’t even manage 5K right now so really can’t imagine getting to anything near 10K.
Thanks for getting back to me! I don’t know what keeps me motivated as every single run is an effort but I’m not giving up - I’ve spent too much on running shoes to throw the towel in! Hope you fly on your next run but if not just give yourself a massive thump on the back forgetting g out there anyway,
I am exactly the same! But it is really hot so we need to be kind to ourselves! I due back out tomorrow- I’m not sure how it will go though! As long as we keep going it will be fine 😆🏃♀️🏅 my friend is a super runner she does half marathons all the time but she says she has slowed right down and cut the distance as well as speed - I think that’s the key! 😄
I went out last night after the football and had a much better 30 minute run - it was 19 degrees and that made a massive difference. However if like your friend I cut my speed then I’d just be going out for a walk! Keep pushing on GRADUATE!
I’m so glad you’ve posted this. It’s hot and in many places due to just get hotter.
I know not everyone can but early morning is the way to go. Check your local forecasts for the days with the coolest early mornings. But beware, very early the humidity can be much higher than just an hour later. So check humidity too.
At the moment sallenson, (why won't my tags work?) I am going topless from about half way round. What the hell, let 'em look I say! A bit of eye candy for the ladies . . . . .
Well I can top that... ( pardon the pun)... Skinny dipping off the Lleyn Peninsula... me and the seals... I may not be able to run right now...but I can swim
When Calvin Klein launched their original underwear ads with Marky Mark, they were plastered all over buses in Manhattan. The urban myth is that there was a marked increase in the number of gay men involved in traffic accidents because they weren't looking where they were going...
Be careful what you wish for...
And going out of your way to "excite" seals? Oldfloss , shame on you....
Let's be honest here, the only reason anyone would not be looking where they were going if I was running around in a jock strap, is not coz (yoof speak for because - trendy eh?) they were distracted but because they'd have the bloody eyes shut!
They might injure each other in the rush to run in the opposite direction. You could strategically position a similarly attired Mitch (LoungeLizaard ) to herd them back towards you tho. Like some peculiar episode of "My and My Dog". Without the sheep. Or dog really....
I suspect that this is now starting to get a bit "silly"....
Just catching up on this thread, sitting on a train at kings cross - I just properly laughed out loud - the carriage are staring at me........ make them stop!! Please! Lmao!
Perhaps we're onto something here guys! May I suggest the C25K Topless calender. Twelve months of running shoes and cheeky grins. I reckon it would be a best seller.
I put my hand up for July or August - I don't fancy getting my kit off in winter, after all, we all know the effect of cold on men
Yes, I stayed in the shallows when I realised I was going backwards swimming against the tide. If I’d just floated I would have got to the Isle of Wight!
Hope you are still enjoying the garden; we’re having all meals out there now. Am I the only one just loving this summer?
Thanks oldfloss I've been feeling a bit guilty not run for about a week but heading out tomorrow night. I have been working 12 hour shifts including nights so do have a bit of an excuse. Wish me luck .
It was 45 Celcius here Saturday and Sunday with the humidex. So I gave myself the weekend off. I went out this morning, but by 6.30 am it was 34 Celcius, so I gave myself permission to make it a shorter run than I had planned. It's okay, it will be cooler in September, I'll pick it up then and start increasing times or distances. For now, it's just time for less ambition (& more ice cream!)😎
I agree, this is a great post and a brilliant idea by you. We need to know that achieving running goals on hot days is not mandatory, we need to listen to our bodies, slow down, ease off and not run in the midday sun. The expression 'mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun' springs to mind. Stay cool and run happy 🏃😎.
Thank you Oldfloss ...that’s just what I needed to hear...Gosh I’ve had a couple of runs leaving me feeling like a boiled egg...!! Time to slow down, stop being so keeen & eager & take my time...x
It is really quite exceptional weather for us... and we don't really have time to acclimatise!
You just rest up. take it gently and take a little jogette when it is cooler and when you can... just a short one... I am doing some stamina and strength exercise each morning to keep me going...that does help
Over the horsefly bite and antibiotics..but now on the IC after the routine x ray on my knee, turned up the fracture and patella issues! Cannot run until after the next MRI.. thanks you xx
Ha ha! No i’m not on holiday- yet - i go in a couple of weeks & believe me i have no intention of running in France! My motivation on the other hand - not sure where that went. Maybe i left it on the podium- can u have a look? 😂. Post grad is an odd thing - it’s a bit deflating. Never expected to feel like this after being so fired up at the end of C25K.
I had a bit of a "dark night of the soul" for a day or two. Ask Hidden cos she bore the brunt of it. I just set myself some mini-targets so i had a vague plan for each run. That's help me loads. Dunno whether it's doing any good but it keeps me motivated xxx
That makes 3 of us who felt a bit deflated and lost after graduation. Big build up then the bubble burst. There's so much good advice about what you do next, but consolidating means you're left in limbo feeling bewildered and not sure whether to post for help in little school or big school. Not sure I was any help to sallenson , but we are here for you. Perhaps the knowledge that you're not the only one will help. Good news is, it passes, doesn't it Stephen? Chin up! 😘
It seems like a distant memory now. I've still got my chums, I've got a pretend plan, I'm rocking again. Took me a day or two to sort it out. We're all here to help so shout if you're stuck!!
Sorry to hear you’ve lost your mojo Welshwitch- do you think the weather might be affecting you too? Having been on the IC post grad I didn’t have chance to go through a lull. I was just missing the highs and getting out there. I hope the highs come back for you too.
Yes - I’ve never been good in the hot weather- it really doesn’t help my head! Sorry to hear u were on the IC - that’s so frustrating- i should be glad that at least i can get out there & run! I think the other thing is that I haven’t seen any results- i put on half a stone when i stopped running & was hoping to lose it now i’m back but not so. I’m really watching what i eat too - i’ve always eaten healthily but been doing it more so but still nothing is coming off! I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the beta blockers i’m on for my migraines & there’s nothing i can do abt that - if I wasn’t on them I couldn’t run so it’s a necessary evil. I will keep on keeping on. Thank you for your support- everyone is great on here.
Sounds like a plan Stan! My plan was/is to work on consolidation until i go away - i’m only away for a week & then start working on speed & distance - maybe - i will see how it goes. I won’t stop though - i’m a runner now & once a runner always a runner!
It is an odd time... I did lots of runs for pure joy.... and then moved on, through consolidation to the + podcasts...that was when the time came when I felt I needed guidance again...
As ever, the support on here was so helpful...and you will find that too... it will move you onwards, and you will do that in the way that is right for you.
I ran in France... but very, very early... Glorious but warm
Oh I needed this post just done W9R2 but slower than usual. Went out at 6.30 this morning as its still too hot in the evenings. Abit of a killer as mornings not really my thing but neither was wobbling (I think the term running is pushing it) nine weeks ago. Didn't walk back topless though. Would have horrified the neighbours
I was fortunate enough to be able to switch to early morning runs, running at 6.30am but still warm. I am home before anyone else in the house wake up! I was surprised how many fellow runners (and sensible dog walkers) I meet on my run. I run along a river bank and I have the added bonus of seeing the wildlife who are normally in the shade later in the day. Take care everyone with your running over this hot spell and keep healthy.
❤️ THIS Oldfloss !! So very true. I’m by no means the fastest and I admire those that are. But I run because I enjoy it. I don’t want to bust a gut on each run but just complete it. Yes I’m hooked - which is why I run at 5am when I need to. But after all that is said and done I just want to run and be happy. 😎😎😎
Great advice. I delayed the dreaded w5run3 from yesterday until today when I could go at 7am. Definitely worth the delay and the early start. Don’t think I’d have made it in the heat yesterday
Morning, me too. I got back about 7 mins ago. I haven't run in over a week and was tempted to go back a few stages then I gave myself a good shake and did my w8r3. It actually went better than I thought so I'm now on week 9 whoop whoop 🤗🤗
I’ve just started week 2 and I want to stay on track. So I still went out last night. I took it easy and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m pleased I did it. Sometimes it’s easier to find an excuse?!
Thanks for the encouragement. I’m really struggling. Just started running outdoors on week 7 run 2. It’s a lot harder than the treadmill that’s for sure !
That’s such a lovely post!!! I am feeling so guilty for not keeping up with my program my last run was wk5 r3 on Friday. I nailed it and was thrilled to pieces. Since then I haven’t had the strength or energy and maybe am scared of the heat that have had no interest in running. I plan on a run tomorrow regardless but I need to keep reminding myself I have come this far! We can only go onwards and upwards x
So true! W8R3 the other day was the first run I have missed. Very hot day, busy day at work so not had time to hydrate, came home and felt bad all evening that I wasn't going out my run but my sensible hat was saying 'be serious!!' This running malarkey is quite addictive!
It was W9R2 today & boy it was hard even though it was an early morning run - before the heat (absolute rubbish!!) - probably the slowest run since wk 5 but the achievement of completing it far outweighed how much I struggled : roll on Saturday
