Week 5 - trip to the Osteopath!

Good evening Couch to 5K family. Having been recommended this programme/App by friends I am encouraged daily by how much I am enjoying it. I was afraid of running following bad experiences in the past. However I am loving it. But now mid week 5 I have developed a 'twinge/hurt' in my right glute / spreading to lower back a wee bit. To prevent injury I went to see my Osteopath who recommended no running for 1 week, stretches & rest to prevent injury. Then try going back to week 4 to repeat. Has anyone here had to take a wee break due to a niggle/hurt and go back? I am so disappointed and worried about if this means I will not make the programme? I was loving the sense of achievement and confidence boost this was giving me.

There are very few runners who have not suffered some kind of injury or setback in their running, either during or post C25k, which required them to step back a bit in their training and rebuild their fitness and stamina.......it is part and parcel of being a runner........frustrating, but just part of life.

If your osteopath knows what he is doing, you should emerge better equipped to face the remaining challenges of C25k.

Don't worry, just accept that you are where you are and continue along the best route forward, towards your targets.

Yes, I had to pause for a week between W7 and W8. It is disappointing but the alternative just isn’t worth it.

You will still be able to finish the programme, it's just a mental setback. I hurt my back and was on bed rest for a week. It really shook my confidence in exercise and in myself to be honest, but I gave myself time to recover, and went back into the programme at my own pace (and even back a few weeks - its were I felt comfortable).

Its not failure, it's a learning curve. As long as you take care of yourself thats the most important part, and when your ready you can get back to the programme. 😊

As IannodaTruffe says... many of us have had setbacks.... I had a long spell off after a twinge.. which turned out to be a trapped sciatic nerve.. ( not running related:) I started C25K again.. and went up to Week 5, before I started back where I left off.

You are doing the right thing...slow and steady and you will get there:)

I’ve seen an osteopath for back problems for years (due to my job) but even when I tried periods of running while being seen by her I still had some back issues so myself gave up. But about a year or so ago I started seeing a sports massage lady. She works on my gluteus and back. Since seeing her my back has been amazing. Even to the point the osteopath said she (sports massage) is doing a better job than her. So I now see the sports massage lady every 4 weeks to maintain a healthy back. 😊 plus it hasn’t hampered my running yet (into week 2 run 3 tomorrow)

Don’t let this stop gap let you down. 😊

Thank you - great food for thought I will definitely consider Sports massage as something to aid this journey. And thanks for the words of encouragement too! Good luck with week 3 just around the corner.
