Unfortunately I'm a smoker too and my next step will be to give up because does it really make sense trying to get fitter and still smoking.

One thing at a time though before I fail at everything.

You're welcome. I wish I could stop overnight and I probably could but if I did that, I would probably be charged for murder when it comes to being at work in a highly stressed environment. Joining a gym tomorrow and so if I do stop asap, that money could go on the gym membership instead and still have quite a bit left in my purse.

If you stopped smoking, the money you save would certainly be able to pay for gym membership, at almost £10 a packet in the UK for 20, you save nearly £70 a week not smoking, think of that being a saving of about £280 per month.

I've never smoked as I'm asthmatic but I know there are some good NHS programmes and apps for people trying to stop. Please don't stop running, my lungs have improved massively since starting this and now at week 7 I'm only using my inhaler if I have to go up a hill, which is massive improvement for someone who used to have asthma attacks and have an emergency doctor coming to the house.... The best thing you can do for your body and lungs is to keep going, they will get stronger, running is a great stress relief and you might actually find you don't want /need to smoke as much. Not that I'm a smoking expert, I can only say the benefits I've found for my asthma from doing C25K x

Good luck with all you’re trying to do - it’s never easy to kick a habit but taking up another one (ie, running) sounds like a plan. And joining this forum can be part of the strategy - we’re all addicted to running here, doesn’t matter how slowly, or which demons you cart along with you. Just show up and move as you listen to the app - and progress will happen. Keep posting!

I run and smoke e-cig. During my time on IC, I've noticed that I vape more when I cannot run. Running is an amazing stress reliever, it is helping me mentally a lot.

So try to reduce your smoking and when you will be ready stop smoking. Although I know it's much easier to say / write it than to actually do it. I want to stop vaping, but one thing at a time, and not when I'm on IC.

Running efficiency is all about transport of oxygen to muscles to provide the power. Smoking is a very effective way of reducing that efficiency.

I used to be a smoker, so I appreciate how difficult that challenge can be. All the scary stories and potential savings didn’t make me stop and I certainly tried, but one day I woke up with cramps in my legs and not entirely sure if it might have anything to do with my smoking. I had no reason to think it was. But I have said farewell to two of my dearest and closest family members (not smoking related, but smokers) and I said I’m not doing this anymore. I decided that I’m going to do everything I can to live a healthy life. This couch to 5k is continuing that journey and I’m just as determined for the same reason!!

You’ll know when it’s time to stop for you!! ❤️❤️

I couldn't walk a flight of stairs without being breathless which is why I gave up the fags, started couch to 5k and started slimming world. I'm on week 6 of couch to 5k, something I couldn't have done when I smoked. I use a Vape and it works for me. Day 69 smoke free.

Me.

Hoping as I run more, I will be able to stop smoking and manage my stress through exercise. That's what happened last time I did this.
