Hi

I’m on week 4 run 3. Was loving this until I developed shin splints.... any tips? I’ve alreay had my gait measured etc and have now got a foam roller. I really don’t want to have to give up as I am doing race for life in a few weeks!! Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

There was a thread a few days ago. There was some helpful tips there.

Think suggestions of trainers, foam soles and some ice packs and stretches

Christ, they hurt, don't they! I'm not a medic so I'm excusing myself in advance of any nonsense I may spout! ;

Rest

Foam roll (you have to use it, not just buy it!)

and my special personal favourite cocktail of Voltarol cream and Tiger Balm!

I also wear compression running socks, which seem to have helped (and look incredibly sexy), though that may just be a coincidence!

Also Gin & Tonic seems to work wonders for pain relief :-)

Good luck

The article linked to above is useful.

Most biomechanical runner's injuries are contributed to by the impact of running, so do all you can to reduce the impact. Slow down, avoid heelstriking, keep footfall under the body, not out in front, run on grass or treadmill.

It persists, best to see a physio or GP

Good point sir -moving off the tarmac and onto a softer dirt trail made a real difference to my lower back and calf pains

Thank you!!

I have compression socks also. So pretty lol!

Tried the roller earlier and it hurt like hell but in a good way ( I think). Is that supposed to happen?

A very large Bacardi and Diet Coke could well be the answer.

Foam rollers were invented by a sadistic maniac. In the darkest depths of hell amidst all the pain and misery you will find foam rollers.

Search this C25K site for the word "Assassin".

You'll find me banging on about shin splints and running with a shorter stride / faster cadence.
