57 year old overweight bloke who needs to lose 6 stones and I'm hoping this will help
Starting tomorrow, any tips or advice ? - Couch to 5K
Starting tomorrow, any tips or advice ?
Only 1 tip. Slow down it's a jog not a run. Oh and tip no2 follow the programme to the letter it does work
Exactly as Adam has said. Keep it slow, just a little faster than your fast walk pace. Stick to the plan.
Exercise alone won’t make any weight loss. You’ll have to concentrate on a healthy diet for that part. But as the weight comes off the running will get easier.
Stick with it and enjoy the journey.

Put your trainers and running clothes out ready to help you get motivated tomorrow! Good luck and have fun
Slow down and slow down again!
Stick to this forum as the support is fantastic!
Set your run days and stick to them as much as possible; eg tues, thurs, Saturday.
If you want to lose weight you’ll need to diet too. I’d recommend slimming world as I’m a big eater and it works as king as you stick to one third free food 👍🏽
Good luck and update us after tomorrow’s run!
I found when I run I don't want to eat/drink 🍷as much
Along with drinking lots of water and healthy eating, running will help with weight loss - but you have to be patient. 😁
And the longer I am a runner, the more I realise that running slow is important to progress. It is a lesson I continue to learn!
Enjoy. 😁

I wanted people's own experiences, thank u though
Hi, I hate running but felt I needed to do some impact exercise. I’m now week 8, run 2 next. The early weeks are kind and then it ramps up the running time but amazingly I’ve managed it. My legs feel like lead, I still dislike running but I’m doing it. I haven’t lost weight but I haven’t gained more weight and my shape is changing and I feel better. Good luck!! I have also tried to stick to run day, rest day, run day. Hope this helps!
Take it very slow, one day at a time. Don’t rely solely on running to lose weight. You could follow intermittent fasting between runs. I’m on week 5, same age as you and I’ve lost a stone since 4th April 😃
My biggest tip? Start tomorrow!
Seriously, that’s the hardest step. After that, follow all the previous advice that’s been given.
Oh! And SLOW & steady is our mantra.
Good luck 👍
Welcome to the forum.
My tip is to read the guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5... which is based on the experience of thousands of runners who have come before you and the questions that they are likely to want answered.
Enjoy your journey.
Good luck tomorrow Tony. Everything after that is easier! It’s the first run that is the hardest.
And remember: losing weight is 80% about what you eat, 20% about your exercise.
But still equally important.
I started last week. My advice would be to get some earphones that don’t fall out and one of those arm band widgets to carry your smart phone in!
Hi. I too am a 57 year old bloke whose overweight and started for the same reason as you.
I have just completed week 5 run 1 tonight.
I've posted on every run from the beginning if you want to read them but for what it's worth these are my observations.
1. Don't compare yourself to others. Your doing this for you and we are all different and progress differently.
2. All runs, in my experience, are hard and some are harder than others but persevere. Take your victories where you can and don't dwell on defeats.
3. Don't look too far in front at the runs. It seems impossibly hard to believe you can do the future runs so quickly but you can.
4. Stick to the programme and run slow and then run slower still. Speed is not the goal. Running for the time is.
5. To me this is the most important. Do not let your mind screw you up. A lot of this is in your head. Yes it hurts sometimes. Yes you'll be puffing and groaning and sweating. But your mind will Try to convince you to stop well before your body gives up.
6. Take the support of the people on here. They are brill. l have wanted to stop or repeat weeks and when I doubt myself they have been great.
7. Stick to the programme and get out tbere and do it.
Good luck my friend. Hopefully see you post at the finish line

H2O, water and more water, for 2 reasons, your body will perform much better when properly hydrated and drinking a pint before your food and you will eat smaller portions before you feel full, good luck and enjoy the program!
Hi I am in my mid 50’s overweight and never liked running but I am on week 8 now. The program really works just take it slowly and believe in yourself. I found it hard to start with but listening to upbeat music helps me along with Sarah as my trainer. Good luck
