Hi everyone,
Tomorrow I am starting again after lots of years of inactivity. My previous attempts ended due to shin splints. This time I will start slower and follow the C25k plan.
Hi everyone,
Tomorrow I am starting again after lots of years of inactivity. My previous attempts ended due to shin splints. This time I will start slower and follow the C25k plan.
Good luck to you HunterJ on starting C25K tomorrow, you have the correct attitude, start all your runs slow and steady, good luck for the next 9 weeks but remember that you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to. 😊 🏃
I won’t wish you luck as it’s not needed x have a fantastic run x
Welcome to the forum and well done on your decision.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and includes advice on minimising impact and stretching after every run.
Enjoy your journey.
I fell out in under three weeks first time (2 years ago). I am now 50lb lighter and taking it a bit easier, did W7R2 today. I have a very slight twinge in the left calf, so taking two days and running again on Wednesday, I would say jog don't run, and I binned upbeat music in favour of slower relaxing stuff. There is the rest of our lives to speed up, but getting started is where the potential failure lies
Exactly right! Have you seen the Japanese slow jogging film on youtube? It’s a low impact technique that’s designed to prevent injury. I run this way all the time and love it!
Thank you, I will take a look at that.
Try and have a good stretch following your runs and wear some compression socks if you can. I find that once you have shin splints they are always lurking but doing the above has kept them away so far for me. Good luck, you will do great x
I started last year and graduated in the nine weeks, but I also had some problems afterwards with shin splints and a groin injury which left me unable to run for five weeks. Strongly recommend you buy decent shoes as I was running in my daughter's old tennis shoes. I got gait analysis done in a shop near me and took their advice. Rather cheekily I didn't buy from them as the shoes were around £120, but I bought a similar (last years model type) pair online and I've been mainly injury free since. Good luck!
Good luck HunterJ! I'm starting the programme on Weds! 😊
Hi HunterJ - well done for starting again! Try not to go too fast because you’ve done it again. Start from beginning go slow and steady and don’t be tempted to skip days (I did all of this). You will progress and when you graduate you will be a stronger and confident runner. Make sure you keep us updated! Get 🏃♀️ running 🏃♀️
That’s a good sensible way to look at it by taking it slowly. If you’ve been inactive for a long time (as have I), your body will thank you for doing the app properly and not try to run before you can walk (so to speak). I’m on Week 4 and I can’t quite believe that I have been jogging!
Hi HunterJ. I was in the same boat. I used to run marathons in the mid 80s. However, since then, when I have tried to run for half an hour, I would end up with calf strains. Thought my running days were over. I've just finished Wk8 and have had no problems with my calves. Start slow and build it up over the 9 weeks. Good luck.
