Weight and natural body Lycra - running benefits

3 people recently asked me if I had lost weight. (I haven’t, in fact carrying a few extra pounds) This got me thinking . I know many people on here hope to see weight loss as one of the benefits of running. Well here’s my view for what it’s worth.

Muscle weighs the same as fat after all a kilo weight of anything is still a kilo . The difference is density, so I might need a sack for a kilo of feathers but a kilo of lead would probably fit in my hand. Thinking about our bodies then, I see gaining muscle as building my own personal Lycra suit , same body squeezed into a smaller package! 😁 hence the comments from my friends I guess. Eating less exercising more and we can literally run away from the fat.....

I’ve battled with weight and body image since fat teenage years so I really understand and admire those people on here who are changing their lives , I put this post up to encourage people to worry less about what the scales say and watch instead the new Lycra suit you are creating.

Happy running all

Love this post! I’ve just ditched going to slimming world (I’ll still follow the general plan) coz I can see the physical effects that running has made to my body however the scales aren’t really shifting, (I’ve lost 8lbs since Xmas and I’ve been an angel!!)

I’ve decided (after years of weight battles both physical and mental) that I prefer feeling strong and healthy which is what running is giving me. 💪🏻🏃🏼‍♀️x

I have been one of the lucky ones ... Never had a problem with weight until now , I know I am never going to have the body I had in my 30/40 even my earl 50s but I certainly don't want to be that fat grey haired women,

So yes I am doing this to get a better body inside and out

I do cycle slowly but that's a fair weather thing ,

Yes I agree with Cat bee, I am stronger and slimmer and weigh more. I eat what I want as breastfeeding and have little time with kids so food is important and Im pretty healthy and have chocolate. My lycra leggings are starting to form new toned legs on week 6 x

What a great way to think laurel55 and its definitely giving me something to think about.

C25K is more about a lifestyle change for me. I’ve lost just over 2 stone so far (1stone since I started the plan) but still at least another 2 to go. My new love for running is helping me want to eat healthily and I’m starting to feel more toned 👍

That is interesting, thank you. I graduated on Sunday and have not lost weight and not seen /felt any body changes, and have wondered why.

I graduated November, changes have seemed to come more recently, one reason I think is that I regularly run for 30 mins at a time now. When I think back there was much less running time in the early weeks of the programme . Congratulations on your graduation

Good point. As time goes will see if my shape changes. I have only been running 30 mins for a couple of weeks - even though it feels like forever. Has the running got any easier for you?

Hmm, I was thinking about that the other day. Not so much easier as more relaxed, my breathing seems easier to control and my legs certainly know they have to keep going for longer. I suppose what is gradually happening is that I run further with the same amount of effort. Post grad runs are really good consolidation as many on here have said. Keeping up 3 times a week has ingrained a habit that I never ever thought would be part of my weekly routines! I hope you carry on enjoying it, whenever it feels tough I think back to that first week - running for 60 secs red faced, near collapse and bambi legs 😂 a distant memory

I’d like to know how you get on
