SI joint problems

Hi everyone. I've been working my way through C25K again and have got to week 6 but I am struggling with back pain after a run which has been an ongoing problem since last year. This is making my progress very very slow! It turns out it is my SI joints that are giving me problems. I went to physio for quite a while last year and have been doing the exercises but am afraid I'm still struggling with the pain at times. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on what to do would be greatfully received! ☺

Hi Lorna, I had problems with my SI years ago. I found at that time, doing the physio exercises two or three times a day every day without fail was the solution. Gradually as time went on it didn’t matter if I missed a day or two. The other helpful advice was to change the way that I get out of the car. I turned 90° on the seat and put both feet on the floor before standing up. Hope it settles soon for you. 😃

I think so. - I was reflecting also, that the problem (along with a few more minor grumbling joints ) has almost completely disappeared since I started going to a Pilates class once a week.-Just a thought! 😄

That's interesting. I'm starting a yoga class this week so maybe that will help!

Yoga should help as long as your teacher can adapt the postures for you. Any kind of exercise shouldn't hurt and having gone through a lot of back problems myself, it has taken me quite a few years to make the difference between the feeling when your muscles work and the sensation which turns out to be pain when they are under strain. Your physiotherapist, I suppose, is helping you to make the difference. Once you know your limits, you can work within those and rebuild confidence, exercise more, always knowing that whatever you do, you'll have to be careful with posture. And then run again :-)

I'm a big fan of osteopathy (not chiropractors) since the physicians are very gentle and they work on all the muscles chain, paying a lot of care to posture, how you stand etc... But you need to find a good one. Mine (I live in a French city) changed my life a few years ago and with all the work done with the physio plus postural stretching classes (kind of a yoga), I can now run comfortably, always making sure I stretch before (warming up is extremely important for those of us with a wobbly condition/skeleton lol) and after (15-20 mns and a repeat 2 or 3 hours afterwards if I have the time).

Anyway, all this to reassure you: you'll be able to finish the programme and carry on running as long as you get into a certain routine for your back. As Elfe 5 said, it requires everyday's practice, which is not easy to do with our busy schedules but you'll get the benefits. Good luck and I hope you'll be soon going for W7!
