Running with cracked ribs

Hi all I’m at the end of week 2 (newbie) and I have cracked ribs from an injury at work, I’m wondering if anyone else has run with this kind of injury and will it be ok for me to do so?

Sorry no experience. Sounds to me like medical advice is needed. Running can wait until you have seen your GP

Yes. I fell down some concrete stairs about a month into c25k (don't ask) and needed about 4 weeks to recover. Tried a gentle short jog at 3 weeks but it was pretty painful still. I think you need to leave it 3-4 weeks at least. Then suck it and see..You might have a major crack/break or a minor fracture and that makes the difference concerning how quickly you can come back..You won't lose too much fitness...I only needed to go back 1 week in the programme to pick things up again.

Thank you for your help it’s very much appreciated. I work in mental health and did it during a restraint. I did it last week☹️

I guess it will be a few weeks yet then☹️

Fell down stairs on the morning of my sons wedding. Painkillers helped me get through the day but full recovery took some time. Be patient. C25k will wait for you. Dont rush.

Been given morphine for the pain but I’m afraid to do anything in case I do more damage and I wouldn’t know as the morphine is so strong☹️

I broke/cracked all the ribs down my right side a couple of years ago, falling out of a tree onto a tree stump. I couldn't do anything at all for the first few weeks because it was simply too painful to breathe. I couldn't sleep, sit, walk, whatever. The advice I had at the time from the hospital was as long as the broken ends were not protruding and risking poking the lung, it was okay to run once it felt possible to do so. I resumed running as soon as I was able to run and breathe at the same time.

If you can breathe properly without pain while running then you should be okay. If it hurts, don't do it.

Thank you

Stop running...I had this happen to me..see the links below...

It was three weeks before I ventured outside again... but in those three weeks I did all the exercises that are recommended for cracked or broken ribs...having broken them before:) I knew the form:) I could not have run initially anyway, because like Rig it was so painful...

The running is high impact and that is a real no-no with the rib injury. I assume you have seen the GP or been to A and E, just to check there is no internal damage other than the ribs!

Please do not run.... :)

in reply toOldfloss

Been to my GP and also been to A+E for X-rays and was told I have a splint fracture along the rib. No internal damage though.

That is good... do the NHS breathing exercises , try to keep moving with non impact.. and rest up until things settle:)

Thank you😊

Did w2r3 today, I think I should have left it maybe a few weeks more. The run was good and went well it was afterwards. I never listen.😭🤕

Just looked at your first post, cracked ribs, please take the advise from Oldfloss and Rignold👍👏👏🌟🌟

I see you have consulted your GP and if all has been cleared and you are comfortable with your short runs, then take it really slow .Any movement good, just walking.👍🤔

No hurry to charge through the C25k programme. It will be there anytime your good to proceed.🤔
