As I was getting ready to go out this evening I realised I’d forgotten to bring my chest torch downstairs with me, and couldn’t face going back into the room with the noisy dogs to fetch it. Instead I dug out one of my trusty arm lights and set off. Laura suggested that trying a new route could be a good plan, and although I’d originally planned on keeping to my familiar ‘round & round the park’ it wasn’t much fun in the dark, so after the warm up walk on a whim I decided to go down the main road instead - which I haven’t done since the start of week 4! Today started as a grumpy day, and although it did improve I definitely needed a good run to clear my head and settle me, but I was unconvinced that 25 mins was going to feel good or even achievable.
The first few minutes just felt as horrible as always, but I settled into a steady pace, reminding myself to keep it slow. Down the main road I went, over the bridge, past the pub or hotel or whatever it is with all the lights, and that was five minutes done and starting to feel better. On and on I went, past other familiar landmarks - the sports ground, other pubs, another hotel with lights, Mrs RunKeeper told me that was ten minutes but Laura remained silent and I realised she wasn’t going to speak to me until the halfway point. Ok... keep plodding on!
And then I was half way - definitely a bit tired, legs not feeling entirely easy, but good enough to keep going. I decided to go a bit further down the road so that my cool down walk wouldn’t have to be round the park bit. I’ll just go to the next bus stop. Hmmm, that won’t be quite enough. Next one! Hmmm, maybe a little further. Oh look, that’s where I turned round all those weeks ago, that’s a good place to get to....!
So I did. Then turned round, and headed back the way I’d come. Steady steady, just keeping going. Quite enjoying it in an odd way too though. Back past the allotments, then the hotel, and then I was surprised to hear Laura say there were only five minutes to go. As usual I relaxed more into them, although I definitely didn’t pick up my pace as much tonight as I sometimes have done. Absolutely no question though but that I was going to keep running right to the end! And I did. 😊
That last 60 seconds was hard work, but so worth it. And maybe for my next run knight go out armed with the knowledge and belief that I really can do this!
