Off I went. Half way through my phone stops playing my music. Running and trying to fix it. Go into my c25k app. It’s paused. Ok. I play it again. Resign to the fact I am not getting sound through my ear phones. I melted. I stopped. Fifteen minutes in. Went home. Can I also add I have been finding it hard recently. Past three runs. Not enjoying it like I used to. I think I need to change to more a positive mind set.
W8 R1 I MELTED....😩: Off I went. Half way... - Couch to 5K
W8 R1 I MELTED....😩
Have you tried planning your route to give you a positive mind set? I much prefer running outdoors compared with a treadmill because every corner turned is a new section. I also plan my route so that the first half is slightly uphill - that means that when I turn around at half way I know the rest is either flat or downhill - that makes me believe it’s going to be easy!! Keep going, mix it up a bit, enjoy it again 😊
Thanks for your reply. I have just started running outdoors. Did the first six weeks on treadmill. A lot of how I feel is confidence I guess. I am also limited to where I can run as I live in a small village but yes I plan my route. Maybe I should switch it up. Will be glad of the light nights so i c an take it our on the roads 😀
When I ran yesterday, my first 25 minute run, I lost Michael Johnson after his 5 minute update. Luckily my music continued and I was timing the run on my watch so at least I knew exactly where I was. I have no idea how the app manages to turn off in my back pocket but pleased I managed the full run! You can do it!
Technological failures are so annoying. You still ran for 15 mins straight though which is good going. The runs without a walk break are tough, I think they take a bit of getting used to. Maybe take an extra rest day? You can do it!
Thanks 😀 yes it is a bit of getting used too! Will keep powering through 😊
aha you’ve just started outdoors after the treadmill. Outdoors can be hard because the surfaces aren’t so predictable and sometimes you can divert attention to worrying about the environment rather than just free-running.
It is quite a hit and miss affair to get your own perfect running recipe. For me it was Mr Smooth as coach (Michael J), running at the same time in the morning and running every other day ( I like habits!) and also I found I ran better listening to cheesy 80s music. But it took me a bit of time to work that out and I never had the distinct change of treadmill to outdoors to cope with.
Also you said you got a bit angry - I know when that has happened to me my running suffers because its misplaced focus and energy.
Was there a ‘perfect’ week of runs that you had, was there anything about the best runs that you can recall and incorporate into your new outdoors running?
Also the other thing I’d mention is that at this stage of the programme cumulatively you’ve done quite a few kms now, and if I had my time again in the last 2 /3 weeks of the programme, I would have taken an extra rest day every so often, just to allow my body to repair after the greater cumulative effort.
You are doing brilliantly for someone who has switched surfaces - outdoor running is tougher in some ways and easier in others. But it is distinctly different and it could be that is putting you off your stride both metaphorically and literally.
Forgive the blather, I just hope you find the best recipe up to your graduation.
Good luck and happy running
Thank you so much for your reply. A lot of what you have said has made sense to me. I am discovering that I prefer to run to music that normally wouldn’t be my first choice.
Yes I am a creature of habit too. And when it all failed on my phone I just couldn’t imagine what I would do ha.
Yes I do three runs a week (3 in 7 days) do you think this is enough rest?
And my struggles are different running outside. In a lot of ways it’s easier but I agree that I have lots of new things to consider. I will hopefully gain confidence over time. Thanks again for your advice.
Hi I think 3 runs a week is fine, I’d just make sure that when the week has one longer run in it, take an extra days rest before that one. Or if you don’t feel quite on the game, take an extra day then. A days delay will make no difference now to your future running life. I got hung up on doing it in the 9 weeks, and really that was silly. Most of us take longer and that’s fine too. This is very much my view with a distinct helping of hindsight!
Thanks again. I know part of it is pressure to get it finished in that time.
I think you're doing really well, Lc_85, and I also think it's important to bear in mind how far you have already come. There's no doubt you will be able to do this, it may just take a little longer than you wish. And while I think the programme is excellent, it also seems to me we can sometimes allow ourselves to be intimidated by it. After all, the real objective for most of us (it seems to me) is getting fitter, and you are indeed doing that.
I graduated in early January but couldn't keep up the long runs, I'm not sure why. So I started again and am now about to tackle week four . I feel better, more 'toned up' for just getting out and moving. As someone else said this morning, we are not training for the Olympics.
You are so right to look for a positive mindset, it makes all the difference. So remind yourself of your achievements thus far and believe in yourself. I would like a £ for every time I've read a graduate on this site saying "I never thought I would be able to do this". That'll be you in a few weeks.
Happy running and good luck.
PS
Everyone has meltdowns. It doesn't matter in the overall scheme. What matters is getting back out again after a rest.
I know you weren't getting sound through your headphones, but I find that switching up my running music helps my attitude too
Yes I really do need to invest some time in making new play lists and have been thinking about that a lot today. I find some music I love to listen to just is not what I want to hear when running.
I'm eclectic, I've everything from 'Lust for Life' by Iggy Pop to 'I'm too Sexy' by Right Said Fred. I've also got 'keep on running' by the spencer davis group and Parklife by blur. like I said, eclectic.
I also use the programme 'Zombies, Run!' which is an audio drama for running, the cast talk to you and I find it makes me feel like I have an objective when I run
