I think one of the things I have learnt about my runstreak journey that I wanted to share ( day 420 today but I have been running for 5 years now) is about learning to adapt. I used to think that a run was a run and that’s it. Now I think it’s all shades of grey ( not quite 50... 😉). To illustrate the last 3 days of snow have brought 3 different runs.
1. A run with my son in the woods..... fresh snow that was knee deep in places. We adopted a kind of trotting approach with a stop break every half a mile. We both agreed walking was almost harder than running so we abandoned that for the rest breaks! Hard work but great fun....
2. A shorter run on day old snow along the roads. I adopted a very slow rhythmic patter without a lot of bounce that landed me securely without risk of slipping. I walked over the drifts and slidey areas.
3. Back in the woods today as the big melt started. I adopted a similar approach to number 2 and made the most of my grip on the balls of my feet to get up the hills on the icy slush. The worst was the sting of the freezing water on my feet which went numb so I kept it short. The sun was just coming up and the woods looked so beautiful , it really lifted me.
So to summarise, What I have learnt that I wanted to share with you is the importance of an adaptable mindset to my running which has helped when faced with different terrain and weather situations. But most of all it’s to have fun and explore with a strong body and an inquisitive mind....
Happy Panthering
