We have a lot of snow which has settled and I am in my last week 9. I’ve not been able to go running today and not sure whether the snow will melt away by the end of this week. I am so disappointed but I know it’s far too dangerous to run. Snow is about 8cm deep and icy. Does this mean it will set me a few weeks back?

You won’t lose fitness over short a break like this because of snow. The programme guide says you don’t lose at all over two weeks and only slowly after that. You could do some strength and flex, or other fitness work at home while you can’t get out to run. It’s really sensible not to risk an injury. I say this as someone with a current injury!
Thank you for getting back to me MissUnderstanding. I am really sorry to hear of your injury and wishing you a speedy recovery. If the snow melts by the end of this week this means I could pick up from where I left off and do my 3x30 mins then and pick up from where I left off. I know that I will continue and repeat the week 9 run for sometime until I can go further! I am nowhere near the 5k in the time I am running but that’s what i will be working on
Fantastic! When you announce you’ve finished, we’ll send you some links to post c25k running and how you might like to build up to 5k after a period of consolidation. Most people don’t cover 5k in the thirty minutes during the programme-I think the programme is badly named in that respect. Plenty of really good runners don’t ever cover 5k in thirty minutes. Loads and loads of graduates manage to achieve the distance by slowly extending the duration of one of their runs when the time is right. I’m sure that you’ll hit that 5k distance goal when you’re ready-don’t let it take any of the shine off the massive celebrations you should be having when you finish the couch to 5k. I’m getting my pom poms ready!!
Thanks for the good wishes! I tripped on a run and landed badly. It’s a nuisance but it could have been much worse. Hopefully I can wait on the couch patiently and find some useful things to do in the meantime to keep myself out of mischief!
MissUnderatanding , thank you for your kind message. You just don’t know how much that means to me. I was starting to feel like I’m no where near the 5k and whether I had anything to be proud of as I am slow! You’d message has made me feel that I can be proud of what I have achieved so far. Thank you for being lovely.
You absolutely deserve to be proud of yourself! Think back to week one when you were running for a minute at a time. Now you’re going for thirty minutes! That’s amazing progress.
One of the things I’ve grown to really love about running is how we’re all on our own journey and we can all spur each other on. It’s such a great community. I’m never going to win a race so it’s always me against the run not me against every else. All the other runners around me will be the same. We’re all aiming for the same goal (to finish!) and it doesn’t matter whether that’s fast or slow. I chatted to a guy at the start and the end of a big event I did recently. He’d finished over forty five minutes ahead of me but there was no judgment or difference in celebration. Just pride and solidarity that we’d both run and finished with a smile.
When you finish your graduation run, it really won’t matter whether you’ve done 1km or 10km. You’ll have completed your run and it will be a massive achievement to be really proud of.
Thank you for sharing that lovely story with me MissUnderstanding. I really appreciated that. I never thought I would say this but I’m really missing my run. It’s fascinating how we can build habit into our lives. I’ve never tan in my life and now I’m missing it.
That’s great! Sometimes the hardest thing is to be sensible and postpone a run until it’s right. I’m itching to get out but there are still too many bits of me that are damaged! It’ll be extra sweet when it happens.
I'm in the same predicament as you. I'm so close to W9 Run 3 and ice has stopped me. It's really good to read I'm not the only one. Also I am nowhere near 5k.
thank you Perirunner, I was starting to feel sorry for myself. Let’s hope the snow melts quickly and we can compete and start to build on our running adventure.
Please do not worry about the snow delaying you !As MissUnderstanding has mentioned, you will not really loose any fitness in the first 2 weeks , and to be honest , staying injury free is more important in these weather conditions .
And certainly don't be concerned about running 5k in the 30 minutes of week 9 .
Don't worry about the distance. I was getting fairly close to doing 5km in the first runs of week 9, so I thought I'd try to get it on the final run.
What I had ignored was a little niggling feeling in my ankle. I should have been reducing the intensity of my runs, not pushing to get a particular distance.
I did run 5km in exactly 30 minutes, but for the last minute of it I was running through pain (also something you should never do) as I'd sprained my ankle by swerving round a very muddy puddle.
A month and two physio visits later, I was able to start running again, restarting C25K from scratch.
Nowadays I'm stronger and I can regularly do parkrun 5Ks in about 28 minutes.
