This isn't mine, it was posted by Pepper Lawson in the Did You Run Today facebook group, but I thought it hit the nail firmly on the head, so, with kind permission, I reproduce it here:
"I think it takes a couple of years for our bodies to adjust to a new activity like running. I mean, really, we are giving it a pounding when we run, aren't we? And many of us are, ahem, mature? Yet, we expect it to automatically cooperate after years of inactivity and mostly it does but when it won’t we moan like little biatches! Yes, many of us will suffer injury(s), particularly in that first year or two, but then our bodies begin to adapt and adjust to the new regime.
It isn’t just our bodies though; our attitude changes and we experience huge personal emotional growth too. We begin to believe in ourselves more and more. Overcoming injury(s) and quelling any nagging self doubt plays a huge part in that growing self belief and knowledge that we have a deep well of amazing courage, strength and determination and other necessary resources to call upon. Running is great! Just saying."
