Menopausal running

Aged 53 taken up running to get fitter and battle menopausal weight gain and hot flushes. Hardest part was the mental battle with my brain telling me to stop. Did my first 10k last night and was absolutely elated.Usually run in evening when nice and cool as I do overheat.

I've been running same route for some time, usually hitting 8k but changed route recently and second attempt felt I could do longer so added extra, and surprisingly achieved 10k.

Perseverance is the hardest battle, aim to run 2-3 times a week and vary with gym attendance.

I am initially slow and quite stiff when I start running, but later find my pace and endorphins kick in. Steep hills in parts, but although I jog very slow up them, psychologically I know I can't stop, and when u reach the top you feel Fabulous.

As a former smoker approx 10 years ago I am ecstatic at current achievement, but keeping it up biggest battle.

Great post, very inspirational. Congratulations on your first 10km. One of many I hope for you. I had already started to run before menopause kicked in and brought its challenges, running has really helped me to keep my sanity and control over changes.

That’s brilliant, well done you!

I started this running idea because I’m hearing my older sisters struggling with the peri menopausal symptoms. I figured being fit might help...do you think it’s made a difference to you??

Massive difference. My sleeping soooooo much better whereas previously it was so disturbed. Additionally losing weight, albeit slowly. Added to this, menopause a bit of a bugger for our bones, osteoporosis etc, so helps with maintaining bone strength too. Exercise in general has given me more of a purpose undoubtedly, as I feel so much better. Don't forget though, we women have to battle the menopause but as my husband reminds me, he has to shave every day! (He said this as he ran upstairs smiling!)

I share your pain. I too am going through the menopause and it stinks. The hot flushes, night sweats and lack of sleep is the pits, but running is our go to and it makes anything more bearable. You look incredible and what a fantastic pic of you. Hang in there.

It's the start of the next episode.... I am sleeping so much better and feel too that I have taken control in a situation that can feel a bit overwhelming. Need far fewer clothes even in these cold days. Nice handstand!

Warm sisters doing it for themselves :)
